"Leave a place better than you found it," Mama's favorite words.
I never knew if she borrowed it from a book of notable quotations, but itâs something she always said to us, and still says. Every morning in the tea fields, as she guided us through our work, sheâd repeat it, not just to encourage excellence on the farm, but as a kind of reminder: how you treat a place will come back to you.
In the fields, sheâd say, âLeave a place better than you found it. Donât think that if you leave stumps lying around, they wonât haunt you. Youâll return to those same stumps, and complaining wonât help. So make it right now, for the sake of tomorrow.â
This quote stays with me every day. It helps me leave behind a trail of goodness wherever I go. I always remind myself: tomorrow, I might come back to this. So Iâd better make it easier, by doing a good job today, for the sake and ease of tomorrow.
