This is my entry into week 126 of @felt.buzz' great micro fiction contest ZapFic.

This is a weekly contest with HBI awards for winners, so please feel free to give it a go. But before you write anything you have to ask yourself:

Can you write a story in 240 characters or less?

It's not as easy as you think.

This week's prompt is: 'Civilian.'

I don't normally do this, but I feel like I should give a mature content warning. I don't know why, we're all adults here, it just feels appropriate.

A wicked sting followed by a powerful bang.
I staggered and blacked out for a second.
People were running at me, why?!
Soldiers loomed closer.
Pain blossomed and I began to go blind.
My blinking cellphone told mum everything.
