Every day, the commuters hurried past the beggar, down in the subway. Once he was a man of no small means but now life has forced him to live this way. Even now, his only companion was an old black blanket, and most times he went hungry because he did not beg enough money to give him good meals. His eyes dimmed from hopelessness and he lived each day almost indifferent to the happenings around him.

But one day, a little girl walked up to him, bent down and dropped her lunch on his lap, a sandwich wrapped in a foil. His eyes which had been glassy from days of rejection softened considerably and in a shaky tone, barely above a whisper, he managed to say “thank you”, as he took the present.

The mother, moved by her child’s act of kindness, knelt down next to him. "What is your name brother? She asked.

"Peter", he whispered. He felt his tears roll gently down his cheeks, he just remembered what it was like to hear his own name, after so many years.

That day, Peter did not only have free food, but for the first time in ages he felt hope within himself. Small acts of kindness is like medicine to heal the soul.
