“RAT RACE”

It was like a mantra, a law written in stone, seemingly unchangeable and valid for generations. From their grandparents to their parents, they just had to follow the same steps. It was almost instinctive, repeated cycle after cycle, pushing the mice blindly towards the abyss, or so we had always believed. Until the last recession, fewer and fewer approached the edge of the abyss, blinded by the glow of the dawn. With curiosity and fear we retraced our steps, fearing to find a multitude of starving mice in our path, but to our surprise, the further we moved away from the edge, the more we discovered where all those mice had ended up, apparently surviving on the edge, venturing out into the fields and reinventing themselves. Far from the laws, far from the road.

Era como un mantra, una ley escrita en piedra, aparentemente inmutable y válida durante generaciones. De sus abuelos a sus padres, sólo tenían que seguir los mismos pasos. Era casi instintivo, se repetía ciclo tras ciclo, empujando a los ratones ciegamente hacia el abismo, o eso habíamos creído siempre. Hasta la última recesión, cada vez eran menos los que se acercaban al borde del abismo, cegados por el resplandor del amanecer. Con curiosidad y temor, volvimos sobre nuestros pasos, temiendo encontrar en nuestro camino una multitud de ratones hambrientos, pero para nuestra sorpresa, cuanto más nos alejábamos del borde, más descubríamos dónde habían ido a parar todos aquellos ratones que, al parecer, sobrevivían en el borde, se aventuraban en los campos y se reinventaban a sí mismos. Lejos de las leyes, lejos del camino.
