Pic1000 - “The LaBeeBees”

in Freewriters14 hours ago

The old woman sat at her sewing table with an excited look on her face.

She yelled for granddaughter, “Julia! Come here, child!”

As the youngest daughter of her youngest daughter, they were a lifetime apart but they still found ways to bond with each other.

“Yes, grandma?” The little one (not so little at 13!) said cautiously. The old woman came up with all sorts of strange ideas when she started sewing.

“You remember those ugly dolls all you kids wanted last year?”

“Yes, grandma…?”

“I made something so much better. Behold!”

And she held out her creation triumphantly. It was definitely...something. It was hand stitched (but poorly) with black thread on white fabric stuffed with scraps. Its face had a weird expression and one eye appeared to be missing by design so it wasn't even symmetrical. Its one saving grace was that it seemed pretty sturdy.

“If those dolls were so popular for being ugly, mine should sell like hotcakes! We could be making LaBeeBee money in no time!”

“Thats not what they're called it's-”

“Who cares, child? Are you in?”

Julia stared at the doll. It kind of stared back almost. Then she sighed.

“I'm in. It's so ugly it's kind of cute. Besides, it's actually ugly in a heartfelt, handmade way instead of a more... commercial and impersonal way. I see potential. How many can you make by Monday?”

Her grandma snorted, “How many do you need? I can make these in my sleep. With my feet!”

I don't do as well with visual prompts, maybe because my stories tend to be so heavy on dialogue. I can see images in my brain but words spark stories for me much more easily.

With this prompt, I see the funny looking doll and I feel like it wasn't meant to be cute but to be different. I don't suppose I can describe much more than that but I like to think the story says the rest. Somewhere in between the lines.

If you'd like to come up with your own story based on the picture prompt you can find all the details over here
