When a class full of young faces nods enthusiastically to let you know they understand what you've just explained, do you take them at their word? Or do you ask a question just to be sure? And then do you pick the first hand that shoots into the air practically vibrating with eagerness to give another correct answer? Or do you look to the back where several children are trying nervously to avoid your eyes, silently praying that you ask anyone but them?
What do you do? What can you do but retrace to the moment when you lost them and try to reinforce the concept that threw them off course…

Well that wasn't much of a story (so many questions, so few answers)! But it's probably familiar to a lot of people whether they were the teacher, the student with the answer or one of the students hoping not to have to show they don't know. It happens all the time.
