Before beginning my dissertation, heh heh heh, I want to clarify for all Spanish speakers that today's phrase, ‘her grandmother,’ refers to ‘her grandmother,’ not ‘his grandmother.’ In this context, I will refer from here on to Matthew's mother's grandmother (his maternal grandmother).

The grandmother, Granny, is a 98-year-old English woman. I perceive her as a loving, protective and practical woman with a strong sense of duty and family, combining tenderness (hugs, comforting food, kept secrets) with discreet wisdom and a touch of firmness (coats, patience), being figures of unconditional love, tradition and sometimes subtle humour, but always with tea and advice at hand!
Matthew's grandmother died several years ago in a traffic accident, so his great-great-grandmother is his grandmother to him, as he was just about to turn 1 when Nan left us.
My dear mother-in-law (that's how I see her) is our ‘ealdemodor’, since in English culture reaching that age is a source of pride for the whole family. At 98 years old, my great-great-grandmother is still there: as strong as an oak tree, with skin as furrowed as its bark, but with a shadow that is still big enough to shelter us all.

Bajo este contexto, me referiré de aquí en adelante a la abuela de la mamá de Matthew (la abuela materna).

La percibo como una mujer cariñosa, protectora y práctica, con un fuerte sentido del deber y la familia, que combinan la ternura (abrazos, comida reconfortante, secretos guardados) con una sabiduría discreta y un toque de firmeza (abrigos, paciencia), siendo figuras de amor incondicional, tradición y a veces un humor sutil, ¡pero siempre con un té y un consejo a mano!
La abuela de Matthew falleció hace varios años en un accidente de tránsito, así que, su tatarabuela es para él su abuela, ya que él apenas iba a cumplir 1 año cuando Nan nos dejó.
Mi querida suegra (así la considero yo) es nuestra “ealdemodor”, ya que en la cultura inglesa llegar a esa edad es un orgullo para toda la familia. A sus 98 años, mi tatarabuela sigue ahí: tan dura como un roble, con la piel surcada como su corteza, pero con una sombra que todavía alcanza para cobijarnos a todos.
