Speed Control

The hot night had turned into a torment for Jorge and Ana, arguing more heatedly than the summer itself. The words that started as a simple disagreement over whether to go to Jorge's in-laws' house turned into daggers flying on both sides of the argument. Their patience was slipping away like sand in an hourglass; the situation had gotten out of hand. Jorge, who had never been patient in his life, unable to control his anger, stormed out the door in a fury, and with a swipe, took the car keys.

He started the engine with a roar that echoed through the entire street, leaving Ana completely alone. Jorge was a lion freed from his cage. With each kilometer he left behind, he accelerated more and more. To the limit, he thought. The air rushing in through the window filled the car with a buzzing sound as if a thousand bees were flying in his brain. But even that air couldn't calm the inferno that burned in his brain, running down his arms to the steering wheel.

Blinded by emotions and anger, Jorge didn't see, or if he did, it was too late. With the speed increasing, so did the danger. Whirlwinds of frustration, anger, and more rage, more and more speed, to the limit, more speed. The curve was there, and along with the curve, his destiny. The car went off the road, flew over the ravine, perhaps with just enough time for Jorge to realize his fatal fate, the tragic accident. In the seconds before closing his eyes, Jorge thought, I was always faster than wise, on the road and in life.
