gtg witness update

A week ago, I marked 8 years since creating my account on this chain. Cheers!

Upgrades (new release)

If you haven’t done so yet, please upgrade your nodes to version 1.27.6. This version includes a fix in the p2p code to avoid crashes in certain circumstances.
Despite the release being over a month ago, only 4 nodes within the top 20 have upgraded, and there are only 19 upgraded witnesses in total.

Additionally, we are anticipating the next HardFork (a.k.a. major upgrade) in September. I expect witnesses to be on the latest version of hived from the 1.27.x line by then (there will be at least one minor release, hopefully soon).

Useful Resources: https://gtg.openhive.network

I’ve removed all older versions from my site, including their respective snapshots.

On the other hand I’ve just updated a lot of resources, including:

  • Old school Hivemind database dump
  • Old school account history node snapshot
  • Exchanges node snapshot (for exchanges, seeds, witnesses, broadcasters, etc.)

Regarding “Old school” nodes, please don’t expect future updates. While they might still be viable in certain scenarios, maintaining their snapshots is resource-intensive. I will keep the last versions for reference.

API node operators are strongly advised to use haf_api_node instead.

For the record:

  • 300GB is the uncompressed Hivemind dump (-Fd -Z0), roughly 60GB after compression (lbzip2)
  • 700GB PostgreSQL data storage
  • 1.6TB account history data directory, which includes:
    • 475GB current block log with artifacts.
    • 22GB current shared memory file.
    • 1.1TB account history node snapshot (uncompressed) - it takes 25 minutes to dump it.
  • 713GB compressed snapshot (takes 1 hour to compress it).

Checklist

For non-witness readers who might find this post boring, here’s a simple excercise with a security checklist:

  • Do you have your keys stored securely?
  • Do you have your recovery partner set to someone who can help you recover if needed?
  • Do you take an active part in Hive governance?

If you answered "YES" to all three, please leave a comment below :-)

🙇

Sort:

Yes, theoretically yes, and yes.

I say theoretically because I'm my own backup, and I assume that I can figure it out or reach out to folks I know who can point me in the right direction lol.

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

No worries, we will help, and hopefully it will never be needed to use, but the most important thing is to make sure that you don't have those credentials in the same place as it will undermine the purpose, i.e. please make sure that if someone will gain access to this account, it won't mean that they at the same time gain access to active key for recovery account.

Many congratulations of 8 years service!

Three yesses although my recovery account is just an alt account of mine, I don't know if matters? I'm reasonably sure I can trust myself.

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

And as I replied to others in similar situation - as long as you keep them separated so you won't lose them both at the same time you should be fine. And by lose I mean leak / stolen, because if you won't be able to access them at all then it's game over.

HHD!

  • yes. its in invisible ink.
  • yes. i think it is a "somewhat" knowledgeable person in this ecosystem
  • yes. voted!

see you! 1.27.6

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

Yes, yes, your recovery agent, I've heard many good words about him (my grandmother told me! ;-) )

I'd say... yes. Although the recovery account is... mine.

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

Having another own account as recovery is OK as long as you separae access to them (like not holding keys in same storage, etc.)

That's a good tip regarding separate access to them. Thanks!

Yes, I keep mine in cold storage in a safe. But I think I'm going to do what @roelandp does and have a copy on paper with invisible ink.

Yes (might change my recovery buddy)
Yes, I have a couple of votes left

Congrats on 8 years wow!

A couple of OG Hiveans have suggested changing HBD nomenclature to HUSD. It's much easier to understand as a stable coin pegged to the USD and removes the misconception that HBD is backed by USD held in some bank account or vault. I wonder if that's something that has been talked about and if it could be considered for the next hardfork in September.

Thoughts?

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

No rebranding is planned, and I'm not that convinced that it would be a right path to go. MiCA is here and there are way more challenges and problems to solve more important than naming convention. Naming it xUSD makes just different set of risky assumptions.
IMHO what we need are use cases.

I agree. We need use cases. I'm of the opinion that one of Hive's most compelling use cases at the moment is being an alternative to Lightning. I'm in Central America, where bitcoin is slowly but surely gaining lots of adoption. It's already legal tender in El Salvador, where companies like IBEX and OSMO have developed bitcoin POSs for merchants, so People know the name "bitcoin". If we could make it as easy as possible for folks to pay Lightning invoices with tools like v4vapp and Keychain, then it might help drive adoption of HIVE as a tool that works well with bitcoin.

That's one use case.

Yes, yes, and yes!!!

Can you tell us what if any changes there will be in the next HF that will impact non techy users please?

And congrats on your 8th Hiversary. I'll see you in Split?

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

As for the HardFork, there are just fixes and improvements, such as for recurrent transfers (fix for existing bug in some edge cases where user couldn't set a recurrent limit time properly, or enabling users to have multiple recurrent transfers to same acccount).
Most visible one I think would be a change for voting in a way that your vote will use your full voting power instead of current mana.
To put it in a simple example. If your vote gives 0.010, and you saw three awesome posts written by alice bob and charlie, and you upvote them, then alice will get 0.001 vote, but bob will get 0.0098 and charlie will get 0.0096.
Of course one could write a bot to vote as soon as voting mana replenishes, casting those votes every 2 hours and 24 minutes, but not many knows such internal quirks and not many wants to write bots or vote taking into account those intervals.
With this change in place user would just vote 0.001 every time, as long as user has voting mana which is enough for 10 full votes a day, or more precisely for 50 votes in 5 days.

Thank you, yes, hopefully I'll see you in Split :-)

Eight years, that´s a real OG right there :) Happy belated Hive birthday! Sto lat! :)

To answer your questions, hopefully a triple yes from me :)

@tipu curate 7

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

Triple double yes to all.. Thank you!

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

(ProTip: you can still do better by approving more witnesses - you can vote for up to 30)

All 3.. Coming up to 8 Years any time now :)

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

yes!

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

And thanks for securing the chain! :)

YES to all three

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

Yes and yes.
If taking actively part in governance means having cast witness votes and reevaluating them every once in a while, than one more Yes!

Thanks for the update! 🙌

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

Of course, “YES”

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

Yes 🤚 I do 😄

Thank you for beeing a good Hive citizen! :-)

You are most welcome. 🙏✌️👌🙏🍀💐🎉

I'll hit 8 years next month. It's been quite a ride. Keep up the good work.

!BEER

Thank you! That's the plan :-)

This is amazing!

I do not understand all of your post is talking about because it's very specific, but it'll be time for me to learn a little more about it and understand it gently 🤔💪

By the way, I wish you a wonderful and happy 8th birthday on our wonderful platform 🍰🤠🎂

Big Hugs 🙂

I would also say YES. I can't always active, but I've managed to find ways to upvote and engage some posts if my internet was restored. 😔

Good :-) However, regarding Hive governance, you are not voting for any witnesses. This isn't related to voting for posts; it's more like voting for a government, but better. It's an important part of the platform. Take your time to learn about Hive governance, and once you're ready, I encourage you to vote for witnesses or set a proxy to someone you trust to handle governance choices for you.

I will remember this words. Thank you so much. 🥰

Happy 8th Anniversary, thank you for keeping the chain up and running.

My keys are well stored
I wrote them down in a paper

Good, although please make sure your keys are protected from being lost. Paper can tear, wear off, get wet, or burn in a fire. You can make additional copies and store them in different locations. Also, there's a difference between keeping your keys stored in a way that prevents loss and keeping them stored in a way that prevents unauthorized access.

Regarding governance, please consider voting for witnesses or setting up a proxy with someone you trust to handle Hive governance for you.

yes yes yes 😊

Ha! I'm actually checking this for everyone who replies :-P

Your recovery partner by default is set to account that created yours, and for a lot of accounts created before Hive happened it is an "s"-word account. It's controlled by s*it, and when s*it happens, s*it won't help you, not only because s*it don't want to, but also because they know s*it about the tech they are using.

You can set it to account that is owned by someone that could verify that you is you.

You can aquire such someone by attneding HiveFest (and even though there are easier ways to do that, this is the one with fun)

Friends Kids GIF by Storyful. 8 years is a very long time. I am here from 5 years and you can say more active after the hive 💪. Non technical guy but still there is a lot more to do. Thanks for the good work.

Happy eighth anniversary

I looked back at my first posting here on Dec 3 2018.

You were my first upvote here.

Thank You

I've not really asked myself these question above. Let me start doing the needful
