Getting closer to enjoyment

To such an extent does nature delight and abound in variety that among her trees there is not one plant to be found which is exactly like another; and not only among the plants, but among the boughs, the leaves and the fruits, you will not find one which is exactly similar to another.

- Leonardo da Vinci -

I wrote about spending some time in my garden a few days ago; I wasn't really doing anything there, just enjoying it, touching and smelling it and looking at the things I've raised, nurtured and cared for. It was time well-invested.

I've had a few people ask me about my garden, requesting to see it, but that's not something I'm overly keen to share on the blockchain - My home is my castle and I don't need people seeing all my siege engines, catapults, trebuchets and ballista that protect it. Ok, I'll be honest, there's none of that at all, honest...or is there?

I'm not going to disclose what defensive strategies I employ at home and like to keep my home private, few in my real-life-world ever come here let alone showing it to online people, but wandering about the other day, seeing just how nice everything looked, made me want to capture a few images. I decided to take a few pictures with my camera, an mirrorless Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III, and used my macro lens to get a little closer to the plants.

I focused on the flowers mainly as the colours are pretty spectacular. I've always loved the contrast between the colour of flowers and the green of the foliage and at this time of year my garden shows that off to full advantage.

Above you can see lobelia, orchid, pelargonium, stocks, sweet pea and French lavender - I think the colours speak for themselves so there's not much more to say on that. The scents from these flowers are stunning also - in the early morning and at dusk sitting in my garden is simply glorious.

My garden isn't just for show however, it produces.

I have a fair amount of fruits and vegetables in the garden, not enough to completely replace having to go to the market, but I get quite a lot of produce and am able to trade some for other things on occasion.

Below you can see two variety of tomato, apricot, lemons, oranges, apples, tomato plant flowers and nectarine. I have much more though including, French beans, lettuce, capsicum (green pepper), spinach, cucumber, strawberries, asparagus, limes, plums, onions, a multitude of herbs, red jalapenos, almonds and so on. It keeps me busy at times, but I love raising the things I eat...they just taste better.

I spent a couple hours taking photos - not because I had two hours worth of things to photograph but because I'm not the worlds best photographer and I have to take a gazillion shots to get a handful of good ones. I enjoyed it though, despite getting frustrated with the wind, the plants and my camera...Ok, it wasn't their fault the photos weren't coming out, it was mine. I got a few reasonable ones though, some of which I've shared here.

I'm a busy fellow and have a lot going on in my life, professionally and personally. Am I pressured? Yeah, I am I guess, pushed and pulled in different directions. I'm good at prioritising my time and tasks though and I always make sure there's time for my garden and natural places in general. I'm far from the best gardener who ever walked the land, and very far from the best photographer, but engaging in both things, combining them at times, is something I gain a lot of enjoyment from and whether I do them well or not, it's the enjoyment of it that really matters.

Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - Tomorrow isn't promised so be humble and kind

How come you have all the nice flowers and veggies, while I have nothing. Everything here is gray and it's cold too! This is discrimination! ☹️☹️☹️

Lol, well you need to add some colour somehow. What do you think? Any strategies? Some painted flowers on the fence and the side of the house maybe?

I believe that apart from a matter of privacy, some things are better not to be seen here than to leave room for the imagination, right? 😉 I'm sure your garden is amazing. I'm organizing part of mine to create a bigger vegetable garden, for now I have many fruit trees (lemons, oranges, tangerines, an apple tree and a medlar) but zero vegetables... I'll fix it soon hehehe! 💪💪💪

You've got some nice fruits in, and with the addition of some vegetables I'd say you're well on the way to having an awesome garden. Being a chef I guess you'd like to cook with the produce you made yourself, I know I get a lot of enjoyment from doing so.

Well done, you nailed it perfectly, it would be wonderful to create the raw material yourself and then transform it into delicious recipes... I already do it with fruit, being a pastry chef I also get beautiful cakes with apples and lemons 🤤🤤🤤

Pastry chef? Now I really want to be your friend! 🤣

Eh eh this thing siccere me often. Well who knows maybe we will catch up in Italy or my wife and I will come to live in Australia, never say never in life... there can always be an occasion to taste my desserts 😉

Well, if you are gardening, you need one very special piece of field artillery at least...

Now you've gone and done it...I have to amend my Christmas wish list!

I'm just here to help.

Santa will have to double back to make it work, but he's up for it. Those reindeers are fast!

Mhm, you have beautiful blooming flowers and healthy vegetables there, you must have taken care of them despite how busy you get in your professional and personal life. 😊 If I also have a garden as beautiful as this, sitting there (and yeah taking pictures😁) might be the first thing I'm doing in the morning.

A gardener and a photographer in one! 👏👏👏

Thank you, yes it takes time and care, but the process is as enjoyable as the end result so it's a double win. Whilst I'm certainly busy in my professional life but I make sure I find time for the things that support me emotionally in other aspects of my life as it helps me sustain a high operational tempo. Gardening is one such thing.

You play Warhammer in your yard? :D

I think you'd have to set up excess trades with other people to be able to avoid going to markets etc completely, seems like a really difficult thing to become a completely self-sufficient island.

Lol, I may have a war hammer or seven, and I use them at times, but sometimes I like the twang, drag and thud sound of the trebuchet and the resulting carnage visited upon the assaulting forces so leave the war hammer in the armoury. I've been known to utilise the good old favourite of boiling oil, but it's messy.

Yeah, I'd need more space and time to cultivate enough to trade for other things and I do not right now. Still, I make some trades here and there and it's kind of fun you know? I get the best eggs in trade for some red jalapenos and swap out some other things here and there. It's enjoyable.

I'm far from the best gardener who ever walked the land, and very far from the best photographer, but engaging in both things, combining them at times, is something I gain a lot of enjoyment from and whether I do them well or not, it's the enjoyment of it that really matters.

You could be describing ME!!!

A lot of people probably, most people aren't quite as good as they think they are, especially if they talk themselves up; best to remain humble right? So I think anyway.

I am so amazing at being Humble.

Haha! 🤣

Photographing plants and their flowers isn't easy in the wild or in a garden but you did a decent job with that macro lens.

I think the 3x3 layout isn't the most effective option for presentation.

Go bold and present each subject separately. As in a portrait.

They are beautiful let them shine. 📷👍🏼

The best way to spend time? Enjoying the fruits of your labour.

I hate posts with a gazillion images in them, my scrolling finger becomes fatigued doing all that scrolling and sometimes I don't have a Red Bull handy to inspire my finger to greater feats of endurance.

I will use the images individually over time.

Well, all the blossoming flowers and other gardening plants are just showing how abundant your castle must be! I'd be one of the happiest souls living in this kind of surroundings. Thanks for sharing them and you still keep your privacy private so keep it that way😍

I like my house and garden areas, they are practical and attractive and aim feel nice when surrounded by it. I'm lucky to have the ability to surround myself with plants.

I envy you, lol! I'm sure it feels so good to live in that place. You did great in making it so pleasant and livable place! Looking forward to more posts of your beautiful some parts of your abode.

I'll do some more now and then, for sure.

Your garden is rch and have almost all the delicious Fruits. No wonder you said it is a time for enjoyment. Reading about it is enjoying too.

Yes, I've put some effort into it and am enjoying the rewards.
