The El Molo also known as Gurapau “people of the lake” according to the auto-ethnonym, inhabits the northern Eastern part of Kenya.

In the past they spoke the El Molo language as a mother tongue. It is a kind of Afro-Asiatic language of the Cushitic offshoot, but now most of the El Molo communicate with Samburu.

El Molo is the numero uno African tribe with a population of fewer than 400 people and decreasing, living in antediluvian huts at the coasts of the mighty Lake Turkana basin region.

They have lived around this basin for years and to date, you will find the residue of sacred sites where they worshiped. The gravity and veneration of this sacred place are marked down by the fact that abutting settlements, even in times of strife, do not make a mess of these sites.

Fish is their staff of life, to some degree has been blamed for their poor nutrition and low population growth rate. The El Molo are likely the only Kenyan tribe that in the nth degree that survives on fish. They are old pro fishermen. Their near extinction is also blamed on the saltwater which they drink from the lake.

Fish, hippopotamus, and crocodiles are essential animals to the El Molo. In this settlement, killing a hippo is like killing a lion in the Maasai community. Anyone who kills a hippo is decorated with a necklace made from the hippo’s teeth and a banquet for the whole community is held.
