Off World Jazz Festival

I love music. Jazz is one of the genres I like, but don't devote enough time to enjoying the past several years. Being from the "old school" of music, the jazz artists I'm more in tune listening to are: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and of course, the greatest I feel, Miles Davis.

The impression of jazz music on art is profound. The modern artists, especially African American artists such as Romare Bearden and Jackson Pollick, infused the rhythm, soulful smooth sounds, and vibrant colors into their art scenes. Their art depicted the improvised movements in the way the figures swayed and connected with each other. ¹

Often the scenes connect to musical notes. Exaggerated movements of people are portrayed whereby the body is stretched and swaying in different directions to coincide with the flow of the music.

However, the most noticeable aspect of jazz art is the vibrant colors of the characters and in the background scenes.

The instant you view a piece of jazz art, you can see the movement and flow of the brush as if dancing to the beat of the instrument.

I wanted to see what type of generative art I could design to accompany my fractals that would depict a jazz scene. My vision of a jazz club environment is one where the lighting is low. The ambiance is soothing and dark.

Patrons are having fun talking and listening to the music. Some are dancing. Smoke-filled air surrounds the audience. However, in designing the generative art, the theme would involve an off-world, universal interpretation of a jazz club scene.

Two of my must-haves in the jazz scene were the trumpet, saxophone, and piano.

First, the jazz scene. I utilized from Wombo Art the following text input to retrieve my vision of an off world jazz festival underway in which numerous entities were invited to attend. I was hoping to be able to clearly detect the instruments, such as the piano and the trumpets.

Also, I decided to include the text "underwater" to give the scene an ethereal and billowy vibe as though the scene were held in an unfamiliar environment.

Next, the piano. I wanted to a grand piano. Also, I wanted to match the scene of the jazz festival, so I chose an underwater filter in the same color scheme.

Finally, I added my two pure fractals. The first one I designed I named "Lantern". The image is a product of Apophysis 2.09, a fractal rendering software. I chose the Lantern to provide some light to the scene. It reminded me of a jazz club where the ambience is dark.

The second fractal is an image I also created in Apophysis 2.09. I utilize it primarily as an overlay on other fractals or other art images. It created a lovely shadow effect according to how bright or dark you want your veil to appear. Also, the shade of this fractal affects the underlying image. You always want the underlying image to be visible. However, in this case, I wanted the jazz club to look "smoky". This is scene I conjure up when thinking of the nightclub environment.

After blending the Wombo generative art and my fractals, I feel I accomplished an off world scene where a jazz festival is being held for all beings to enjoy.
