Estaba viendo algunos dibujos animados viejos de los años 30 más o menos. De esos que son en blanco y negro. Muchas de las caricaturas actuales surgieron de esa época, conocida como la edad de oro de la animación. Mirar esas viejas animaciones es como mirar viejas fotos de personas de otros tiempos que hace mucho que están muertas. ¿Y si invocáramos el espíritu de esos viejos dibujos animados? Hoy les presento algo que parte de esa premisa.

I was watching some old cartoons from the 30's or so. Of those that are in black and white. Many of today's cartoons grew out of that era, dubbed the golden age of animation. Looking at those old animations is like looking at old photos of people from other times who are long dead. What if we invoked the spirit of those old cartoons? Today I present to you something that starts from that premise.
No es buena idea invocar el espíritu de esas viejas caricaturas, como es el caso de esta rata animada (creo que ya adivinaste a qué dibujo se refiere). Una vela encendida en medio de una carita feliz dibujada de rojo en el suelo ha sido suficiente para convocarlo desde el más allá a través de un vórtice. Esta vez no es en blanco y negro, tiene colores. Se ve totalmente diferente de lo que era antes y ahora es una cosa flotante muy extraña: tiene cuernos, su cara se derrite, le falta la mitad inferior de su cuerpo y le cuelgan un poco de los intestinos. Su paz ha sido perturbada.
Proceso
Con el concepto creativo del que les hablé en líneas anteriores, procedo a diseñar el personaje ilustrado. Esta rata tiene elementos de esas viejas caricaturas, como los guantes en sus manos de cuatro dedos y la corbata alrededor de su cuello. Además, puse un toque de surrealismo en todo el diseño (como los globos oculares en la cabeza). Así empezó entonces mi dibujo digital:
It's not a good idea to invoke the spirit of those old cartoons, as is the case with this animated rat (I think you already guessed which cartoon it refers to). A lit candle in the middle of a happy face drawn in red on the floor has been enough to summon him from beyond through a vortex. This time it is not in black and white, it has colors. It looks totally different than it was before and now it's a very weird floating thing: it has horns, its face melts, the bottom half of its body is missing and a bit of his intestines are hanging out. His peace has been disturbed.
Process
With the creative concept that I spoke to you about in previous lines, I proceed to design the illustrated character. This rat has elements of those old cartoons, like the gloves on his four-fingered hands and the tie around his neck. Also, I put a touch of surrealism throughout the design (like the eyeballs on the head). This is how my digital drawing started then:

The choice of colors is one of my favorite parts. Those cartoons were in black and white, so to contrast that look, I used bright colors. This is how I colored the drawing:
Para mejorar el aspecto sombrío del personaje, agregué algunas sombras y reflejos en el personaje. Esto coincide con la luz de la vela encendida en el suelo. Así quedó:
To enhance the gloomy look of the character, I added some shading and highlights on the character. This coincides with the light from the burning candle on the ground. This is how it turned out:
Para crear la ilusión de un espíritu que emerge de la oscuridad de una habitación, terminé usando un fondo negro. También agregué luminiscencia que irradia de los elementos en este dibujo. Este fue el resultado final:
To create the illusion of a spirit emerging from the darkness of a room, I ended up using a black background. I also added luminescence that radiates from the elements in this drawing. This was the final result:
