Portrait Portrayal

~ Romanian Red ~

I recently finished an artwork for my lady called Flying Squirrel, which you can see by clicking on that link. It's a pseudo-realistic creation of a squirrel flying on a giant butterfly. But the artwork within this post is something a bit more realistic to some degree. Many might call it a portrait but i am not so sure about that.

Before we get into the subject matter of Romanian Red... i usually like to show the tools of the trade. Here, i have a Magic Rub white eraser, a Japanese .003 micron pen, a .05 prismacolor micron pen, a .05 pentech mechanical pencil, a typical graphite pencil, and a created blender of my own rolled paper device.

1.JPG

Sometimes, i enjoy the imagery of the tools just as much as the artwork itself. It's not always about the skills or tools we have but what we can do with the things at our disposal.

2.JPG

I had mentioned long ago about considering doing artwork based on the hair of a fellow Hive user and her hair. I waited for the time to be right as well as an opportunity that would present itself.

Unfortunately, the proper opportunity never arose and the best chance never presented itself for the art that i had in mind. However, i did take the time and chance to make what art i could based on what i had to work with.

3.JPG

I titled this artwork 'Romanian Red' because i wanted it to represent the country of Romania as well as let the Red speak for itself. Since i was young, i always had an affinity for Romania and therefore respected it's flag.

4.JPG

The value of the Romanian Flag and it's tri-color is very interesting.

5.JPG

Said to represent Liberty, Justice, and Fraternity... the Blue, Yellow, and Red mean more than just colors of cloth. The long-standing history was something i wanted to commemorate in this drawing.

romanian red4.jpg

I personally don't feel i did the 'Romanian Red' justice! That is still yet to be determined!

6.JPG

I did take some images from @creativemary and her blog to draw some inspiration from. Y'all should definitely go subscribe to her blog and support her content. She had taken a break for a while and i don't blame her. There was an imposter duplicating and plagiarising her content on Steem.

7.JPG

I hope this art lifts her spirits. My primary focus was her red hair... but i feel like this artwork took on more value as it progressed.

7a.JPG

Please Check out @creativemary and her blog! She has some incredibly creative and amazing posts herself. Her pointillism is second to none!

7b.JPG

I merged multiple images of Mary to create this image. I only shared a couple of photos of her but i drew from probably 6 or more photos.

7c.JPG

I took my own photographs of the artwork to capture some of the nuances that could not and would not be shared based on computer scans.

romanian red2.jpg

I tried to capture the essence of @creativemary but at the same time apply the values of the Romanian Flag upon her face and flesh. This has been a labor of love and an artwork of passion.

8c.JPG

As she has been known to fancy some body paint from time to time i tried to apply the Yellow/Gold of the Romanian flag on her eyelids. The Blue on her skin/face... and save the Red for her hair.

8d.JPG

The photos i have taken have been to try my best to do some justice to the process. It's mostly the colored pencil that in layers creates the effect of realism that i have tried my best to apply.

9.JPG

I used metallic gold around the eyes. The gold is surrounded by yellow. The blue is the skin tone chosen. I tried my best to apply all the techniques and principles. I know that i could and should have done better though!

9a.JPG

For the most part, i feel like the likeness has turned out quite well.

9b.JPG

I feel like the 'Romanian Red' could be more RED! But i will let y'all be the judge of that.

10a.JPG

I tried to blend the brown and red within the hair! I wanted the hair to be realistic but also fantastic as well.

10b.JPG

If you look at the images i've shared of Miss Mary and compare it to my imagery you can see the correlations as well as my creative offshoots!

romanian red6.jpg

The next four images are the scans that i made of the artwork step by step. They are higher resolution if you want to see the artwork in more detail. Click on the images and zoom in where you like to be able to see the art in it's highest resolution.

We shall see how Red i can get that Romanian Hair. I am truly having a feeling i will have to redraw and recolor everything. It's not just the color but the amount of detail to the hair that i feel is lacking.

This is some good art in it's own right... but not up to the standards i hold when it comes to representing something drawn from real life.

I will finish and see what i think when it comes to the final product. I have a feeling it will feel lacking compared to the true to life imagery i drew inspiration from.

I will try my best to create the image i see in my mind. I thank you all for taking the time to be here, read, and appreciate my art. Hopefully, you will all see the value in my expression!

Thanks for being here!

Wow. Very good. Unfortunately, I can hardly draw at all, so I have special respect for all those who can.

Thanks browski! I'm glad that you can at least respect those of us that can! I try my best...but feel this one is lacking of my own standards! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and comment! =)

Ohh wow! You post it, finally! I missed it because of my trip. So you still feeling that isnt the way you thought! Well, then do what you have to do and can't wait to see the next one!

But I agree with you on this: "I will finish and see what i think when it comes to the final product. I have a feeling it will feel lacking compared to the true to life imagery i drew inspiration from." Cause yeah, She is so BEAUTIFUL! And her hair is amazing!

I think your painted portrait of her is really really nice! I mean it.:)

@missdeli I am actually working on it now. It's turning out really cool. I had to adapt and make a few adjustments but overall it's coming along. Thanks for stopping by to check it out and for your encouraging and kind words! I do hope your trip went well and that y'all had an awesome time!!!

This is truly wonderful @castleberry and the blue with the red is so vibrant. And you know we both love a 'ginger hair' so I'm even more enamoured of this one, well done and excited to see it grow.

It is good to have high standards, of course, but surely you can see it's lovely as is. I learned a long time ago that an artists idea of 'still in process' or a piece 'unfinished' is often done to the viewers eye. I still call pieces, unfinished but have happily taken compliments when other's find it a done painting. And I really like it in it's current iteration as well :)

That being said I just literally did a post where I'm talking about a piece 'unfinished' but still one never practices what one preaches, eh?

Yes, i totally agree about 'unfinished' being a perpetual state of a work in progress! hahahaha

Thank you for your kind words and i do see this as lovely as it is... it's just not what i had in mind. This paper doesn't take well to the colored pencil layers so my ability to blend and get the depth of tones i would like isn't up to my usual standards. I will finish it and be happy as it's own stand-alone piece. But, in the future i may attempt to create my vision once again! =)

Thanks for your encouragement and uplifting perspective. It definitely boosted my inspiration.

Stop being so critical of your work!.. The likeness is spot on and the blues and gold really POPED when you added the shades or red. When I saw the first sketch I thought to myself this looks like @creativemary .. I was right! She has REALLY BEAUTIFUL hair and it beckons to be immortalized. Nice Nice Nice work.. Can't wait till it's all done 😊

Good eye! Glad the likeness is noticeable. I appreciate your encouragement to be less critical as well. Thank you for mentioning the Blues and Gold popping when the Red was applied. It's nice to hear how others see the work. I appreciate you brother! Onward and upward! I hope she likes it when she comes back from her break. =)

She'll love it! She has had a rough go of things in a relatively short period of time. I know she will appreciate this work. She's young, beautiful and has a whole lot of life to live and experience.. And with a crown of hair like that, who can be sad and helpless. I'm sort of jealous of that hair since mine is non-existent. 😆

Hahahaha Maybe we can convince her to send you a wig of her locks! I know about the scammer on Steemit which would be a total bummer. I hope everything else is going alright for her. There is a lot of life left to live and hopefully she shares some of it here with us. She has a very unique perspective on many things. It would be a shame not to share that wisdom with us! And the locks! hahaha Cheers bro

Me wearing a wig with hair like that! Now that's comedy for real. 😆

untitled.gif

really nice work! i must say i especially like the hair, i think its a perfect mix of your own interpretation and the shapes and figures it has on the photos, i do also understand tough that you would consider repaint it if it does not fit your imagination. When we create things I guess ourselfs we judge the work the most. Nevertheless I would be very curious to see how the painting looks at the end!:)

Wow. Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your perspective. Hearing that you especially liked the hair makes me feel a bit better about it. I thought that perhaps i had taken too much liberty and strayed a bit too far away from what made the hair beautiful to begin with. So, thanks for your encouragement. I am my own worst critic. I will definitely finish this one and we will see how it ends up. I still may try again in the future to get the vision i have rendered more closely to what i see in my mind. Thanks again for the thoughtful comment! Cheers

i am glad you got some encouragement:) and i hope you enjoy the further process!!

Thanks for sharing your work and your process with us! Miss Mary is beautiful - I will definitely hop over and follow her :)

She has some really cool content, so i don't think you will be disappointed. Some of her art is incredible. Thanks for dropping by to check out my art and i'm glad you enjoyed seeing the process. Thanks for your kind words as well. Cheers! =)

Great job mate!

@tipu curate 5

Thank you so much for the tip and curation brother! I hope you enjoy the imagery. Hopefully, the final result will be better than this unfinished work!

Looking forward to it!

A job that is being done in the traditional way and very well done, I like that bro. I agree with you, it's not about what tools you have but what you do with them. Good choice to use the colors of the Romanian flag, the blue skin is great. I think it is a job that is going very well and surely Miss Mary would like it very much

Thank Jamm! I appreciate you taking the time to check out my art and comment. I do prefer the traditional mediums. Slowly i will mix it up with some digital applications to my art! I appreciate you mentioning the Romanian flag colors. That was one of my focal points to embrace and have her embody! I hope she does like it when she gets back from her break. Take care bro!

I think that with so many people making digital art, and more so with the nft issue, those who decide to make art in a traditional way are real rebels, hahahaha. Good for you. Cheers bro! ✌️

very good work in progress! I hope to see it finished soon!

Thanks man! I appreciate you stopping by to check it out and for leaving a comment! Cheers

Looking good. You have a lot of work cut out for you with this stylish design. I love the abstraction but I can definitely see the likeness. 😂

Thanks for your encouragement and thoughtful comment. I did want to go a bit abstract but without losing the semblance of the real-to-life version as well. So, thanks for sharing your observation. I do have my work cut out for me... but i saved the best for last, the hair! hahaha

You are welcome. I look forward to seeing the finished artwork.

At a glimpse, I thought that it's Mystique from X-men. But I was surprised about the image reference. It's wonderful.

Thanks! I kinda got that Mystique vibe as i was creating it. It's crossed my mind many times. So, i am glad you mentioned it and that i'm not the only one! hahaha I appreciate you coming to check out my art and taking the time to comment! Cheers

I'm surprised. I had no idea you could do such wonderful things. Thanks for sharing @castleberry 😄

Wow! Thank you for your wonderfully kind words and i am glad that you liked this creation. Hopefully, you will like it even more when it's complete! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my art and taking the time to comment!

Unexpected and interesting! Surprisingly, with this approach, the similarity with the model is not lost.

Thank you for saying this. It's great to hear that the original inspiration is still recognizable even with all my abstractions added. I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment and appreciate the art!

Amazing, what amazing art work. Congrats.

Thank you for taking the time to stop by and appreciate the art. Thank you also for taking the time to offer your kind words as well. Cheers

Congratulations, as always you are very creative, this is important. I found it very interesting and intelligent, to share photos of the details, to be able to appreciate them in the best way.

Thanks bro! I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment. I'm also glad you appreciated the process photographs. Sometimes they catch details the scans miss and vice-versa. Take care and thanks for your kind words my friend.

ooh dude this is amazing! someday I would like to try to do something like this!

Your art is amazing too! It's quite an honor to have you reblog my post. I also appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment here. You should most definitely give something like this a try. I look forward to seeing your creativity on display! Cheers
