KAKEGURUI 賭ケグルイ (2017) | Anime Review

Kakegurui was one of the promising series of summer 2017. The first impressions had been very exciting, full of intensity, suspense and presented an interesting idea, and it remained to be seen if the anime would maintain that quality. The good thing is that Kakegurui was able to maintain and fulfill that expectation.

Kakegurui fue una de las prometedoras series del verano del 2017. Las primeras impresiones habían sido muy emocionantes, llenas de intensidad, suspenso y presentó una idea interesante, y quedaba por ver si el anime mantendría esa calidad. Lo bueno es que Kakegurui fue capaz de mantener y cumplir esa expectativa.

Kakegurui (Compulsive Gambler) is a psychological, mystery and game series. The action takes place at Hyakkaou Private Academy. It is an institution only for privileged students, children of wealthy and influential families. But in this school, it is not important that the student is an excellent athlete or genius in mathematics or science. What matters in this academy is the student's ability to outperform his opponent in games of luck and chance. In this school, whoever wins the games is treated as king/queen. And those who lose are at the bottom of the school's social hierarchy, being treated like dirt. However, everything changes when student Yumeko Jabami enters Hyakkaou Private Academy.

Kakegurui (Compulsive Gambler) es una serie psicológica, de misterio y de juegos. La acción tiene lugar en la Academia Privada Hyakkaou. Es una institución sólo para estudiantes privilegiados, hijos de familias ricas e influyentes. Pero en esta escuela, no es importante que el estudiante sea un excelente atleta o genio de las matemáticas o la ciencia. Lo que importa en esta academia es la capacidad del estudiante para superar a su oponente en juegos de suerte y azar. En esta escuela, quien gane los juegos es tratado como rey/reina. Y los que pierden están en el fondo de la jerarquía social de la escuela, siendo tratados como basura. Sin embargo, todo cambia cuando el estudiante Yumeko Jabami entra en la Academia Privada Hyakkaou.

This is not the first anime series to focus on gambling or gambling. But it is one of the few that has as its protagonist someone who likes the excitement brought on by the suspense and uncertainty of gambling. And who takes pleasure in pushing that excitement to the limit. Unlike the usual protagonist who is pushed against his will in this world of gambling and whose goal is not to give in to temptation and vice and get away from this universe.

Esta no es la primera serie de anime que se centra en juegos de azar o apuestas. Pero es uno de los pocos que tiene como protagonista a alguien a quien le gusta la emoción provocada por el suspenso y la incertidumbre del juego. Y que sea un placer llevar esa emoción al límite. A diferencia del protagonista habitual que es empujado en contra de su voluntad en este mundo de las apuestas y cuyo objetivo no es ceder a la tentación y al vicio y alejarse de este universo.

Since the narrative is essentially focused on gambling and the bets that are made during these challenges, throughout the episodes we will have the opportunity to see everything that comes from gambling. Starting, of course, from the addiction it causes, to the debts that are accumulating, the failed attempts to recover what has been lost, the despair, the humiliation. But we will also see how games that are supposed to be based on luck or bad luck can be manipulated. This approach allows the series to allude to the corrupt side of society, even within the school itself, as can be seen in the opening episode, where those at the bottom of the social pyramid of academia try to climb the hierarchy by doing favors for the elites and manipulating games.

Dado que la narrativa se centra esencialmente en los juegos de azar y las apuestas que se hacen durante estos retos, a lo largo de los episodios tendremos la oportunidad de ver todo lo que viene del juego. Comenzando, por supuesto, por la adicción que causa, a las deudas que se están acumulando, los intentos fallidos de recuperar lo que se ha perdido, la desesperación, la humillación. Pero también veremos cómo los juegos que se supone que se basan en la suerte o la mala suerte pueden ser manipulados. Este enfoque permite que la serie alude al lado corrupto de la sociedad, incluso dentro de la propia escuela, como se puede ver en el episodio inicial, donde los que están en la base de la pirámide social de la academia tratan de escalar la jerarquía haciendo favores a las élites y manipulando juegos.

Kakegurui is a series from the MAPPA studio, a name that has been gaining more and more strength and relevance in the Japanese animation universe. The animation of the anime is beautiful, giving close up looks and mouths, giving an even greater tension the stakes. The work has a beautiful character design, which several times squandered sensuality. The soundtrack is also great. And it follows well the key moments of the plot, in the most diverse and varied games that are presented to us in the course of the anime. In this new series of theirs, the studio does not disappoint. Kakegurui is mainly composed of scenes of great suspense. Even when sometimes the narrative is not enough to make those moments great, they end up being rescued by the animation and realization of the series. These two elements, explored in good harmony, have the ability to elevate the scene to a level that the plot alone was not achieving.

Kakegurui es una serie del estudio MAPPA,un nombre que ha ido ganando cada vez más fuerza y relevancia en el universo de las animaciones japonesas. La animación del anime es hermosa, dando de cerca las miradas y las bocas, dando una tensión aún mayor las apuestas. La obra tiene un hermoso diseño de carácter, que varias veces despilfarró sensualidad. La banda sonora también es genial. Y sigue bien los momentos clave de la trama, en los juegos más diversos y variados que se nos presentan en el transcurso del anime. En esta nueva serie suya, el estudio no decepciona. Kakegurui se compone principalmente de escenas de gran suspenso. Incluso cuando a veces la narrativa no es suficiente para grandecer esos momentos, terminan siendo rescatados por la animación y realización de la serie. Estos dos elementos, explorados en buena armonía, tienen la capacidad de elevar la escena a un nivel que el argumento por sí solo no estaba logrando.

With a good proposal and a very interesting approach, Kakegurui can please not only anime fans, but someone who does not have so much contact with this content. On several occasions we are presented with real moments of tension and almost bordering on a psychological terror. As we follow some characters going to the limit (or passing it) in favor of the desire and addiction of the games. Kakegurui is a good anime bet, literally speaking.

Con una buena propuesta y un enfoque muy interesante, Kakegurui puede complacer no sólo a los fans del anime, pero alguien que no tiene tanto contacto con este contenido. En varias ocasiones nos presentan momentos reales de tensión y casi bordeando un terror psicológico. Ya que seguimos a algunos personajes yendo al límite (o pasándolo) a favor del deseo y la adicción de los juegos. Kakegurui es una buena apuesta de anime, literalmente hablando.
