Ask Anime Question of the Week:
That character that is just strung along in the Hero's journey as a background or side character on the good guy camp but hardly anything applies to them. The sell sword archetype where money, or in their case, what they want can easily be provided by the villain that makes them easily switch sides. There's a rarity for these archetypes because most shows would just showcase the straight up good guy vs bad guy dichotomy, not the ones that are gray and willing to compromise their morals.

Okay,I read the question and the first character that came to my head was Lelouch from Code Geass. He's part of my top five MCs in anime of all time. I love his idea of creating a better world for his sister but I feel he got way over his head. I admire his view of the world so much,it pisses me off cause then that might be more proof that I need to be thrown in an asylum somewhere. It was either Lelouch or Light Yagami as the anti hero I wanted to talk about. I went with Lelouch cause I like him better.
Certainly Spike from Cowboy Bebop fits the bill.
Even if he not a cruel character or bad for others in general, he's driven by rewards for the heads of others. Regardless of who it is, he's after money, not friendships.
Well, this is going to be controversial but I would say Eren from Shingeki no kyojin. I think everyone can give the meaning they want to that end of the anime or understand it as they prefer but for me everything he did and the change of personality with respect to his friends and acquaintances just with the excuse of "saving the world and humanity" seemed very worthy of a villain. He is a character with a very interesting arc and could always be debated.
The first one that comes to mind is Kisuke Urahara from Bleach, he may be on the side of the heroes, but he's more of a wild card. His actions usually obey his own motives, and he keeps several secrets, Urahara has a morally gray side, with methods that could easily be seen as villainous..
Mephisto from Blue Exorcist seemed to fit to this one because personally, for me, he's a suspicious character. I mean, he really said that he's naturally evil because he's a demon, but apparently his love for humans surpasses his nature. His plans were still vague—I mean, is his fondness of humans really the only reason why he turned against his father? Or are there other reasons? Also, I think he could easily turn sides if he wanted to; after all, he's still a demon, and demons tend to be tricky and really unpredictable.
