Ask Anime Week #38: Clashing Genre

TAR_contest.png

Ask Anime Question of the Week:

An example of an anime that has two genres that don't go well on paper but turned out good?

Horror doesn't go well with comedy because you either take the show seriously or get mixed feelings about laughing at dark themes. The Gundam series shows that Love and Robots (Mecha) genre can still work as an example. Share some titles that have genre's that are unlikely to go well but worked out.

Rules:
  1. Comment your answer to the weekly question to this post as an entry.
  2. Must be in English but you can attach a section for a different language too as long as there is an English section that conveys the same thought.
  3. Response must not be AI generated. While this can sometimes be a challenge to detect and prove, it's not worth trying because you're being asked to share in your own words.

I love sports anime/manga, but I don't really like it with romance. However, MAJOR was an exception because I love Goro Shigeno and Shimizu Kaoru together since they were in the Little League. There's also this manga that I've been following since it started which is sports x romance... and I enjoy it. It currently has an anime adaptation. It's called Ao no Hako. :) It focused more on the romance side, but the badminton and basketball games were also quite exciting. ^^

Lulz, during last event we shared posts about Satoshi Kon and now bout Major xD. Hivemind! <3

I had to check your page after reading this... hahahaha
Major is one of my fave baseball anime... and I also saw you post about Giant Killing! I like that anime, too!!!!

Wow, I've never met a girl who liked Giant Killing. :D

I tried to like Major, but unfortunately I didn't like the anime despite its numerous advantages.

Haha... really? xD It was fun, though... the strategies they came up with, the characters including the fans and so on. :)

Ohh.. I see... it's more of a baseball drama but I enjoyed it same with Major 2nd. Why don't you like it? Anyway, when it comes to games and such, I prefer Dia no Ace. :)

Seriously, seriously ;). I know a lot of sports anime fans (sometimes because of Bishounens, sometimes because they like the tactical approach like in some battle-shounens). I often like to watch them because of tactical preparation, planning, etc.

I don't know why I didn't like it. It's my thing with games, movies, anime and TV series that if I don't like certain titles, I often have to force myself to watch them. Normally, I would probably stop watching halfway through season 1, but I promised my friend that I would finish it and write down my impressions, so we agreed that I would watch at least seasons 1 and 2. I once wanted to watch Dia no Ace, but for some reason I didn't watch it with my friends on a regular basis, and then I didn't want to make up for it anymore.

Yes... seriously! It's funny because I like BL, so a lot of people (my other otaku friends included) thought I'm watching sports to ship characters... well, I do at times, but I just love the excitement I feel when I watch the matches or when they try to strategize their next moves... What other sports anime do you like?

The first couple seasons of Major was more of building relationships and trainings, but I enjoyed the later seasons more when Goro played for MLB... especially during the world series.

As for Dia no Ace, I'm rewatching it now with my mom. hahaha It's probably my 4th time... It's funny despite Eijun being very noisy... xD

I don't know, but before I really thought that scifi and historical can't go well because they kinda contradict each other. Scifi is like futuristic and new, while historical involves the history and old stuff. But I've seen some anime that use these genres at the same time, and it went well. Gintama, for example, is one of the scifi and historical anime I can't forget! At first I thought it would be boring, but it went well (thanks as well to its comedy! ahahhaha).

Also, The Empire of Corpses went well because I pretty much enjoyed how they integrated some historical figures (both fictional and nonfictional) into its scifi genre.

Drama and psychological thriller or romance and horror but I've not really watched an anime with romance and horror genres so I'll go with the first one. When I think about Drama, horror, Another comes to my mind. Sometimes I like to mistakenly input monsters as an anime that falls under the drama genre too but my friends always shove my input down whenever I say that so they're probably right or wrong. But Another is amazing,I didn't like it at first. Had to rewatch it to appreciate the concept and everything it stands for, definitely worth watching. Especially in this month of horror.

I think the first example that comes to my mind would be the Terro Ecchi, it does not seem very good to combine elements that seek to scare the viewer with Ecchi aspects, but at least in the anime Mieruko-Chan the result seemed very good and was quite popular, evidently when the anime progressed and ecchi was reduced I feel it was much better.

Don't know whether to feel scared or aroused dilemma?

As someone who used to love romance in anime, I now prefer action and romance doesn't go well with it. It's cringe when intense action is followed by forced romance, like in "Solo Leveling" where the strong girl has a crush on the main character. Those moments make me want to skip because i wanted more fight scenes... i don't know if it's already shown in the anime but i read the manhwa, so ill just assume they included those scenes in the anime.

Paano nalang pag Solo Labeling, pakikipag laban pero walang label at may progress mag isa?

Romance/Horror
I'm going to look at Vampire Hunter D for this. The whole thing is Epic, but there's a part where its real serious, romantic stuff and then next scene there's a talking hand....
Any other film I don't see it working, but D makes it work 10000%
