Hello to all members of this community, anime and drawing lovers! I'm so happy to share another drawing collaboration I did with my dear friend @tegoshei, motivated by continuing to improve my digital art skills; especially me, since I usually take forever to illustrate, I feel like I draw faster knowing someone's waiting for me haha. For this collaboration, we chose another BL/yaoi work, in fact, my favorite: Ai No Kusabi by Yoshihara Rieko.
It's worth mentioning that Ai no Kusabi began as a novel in the 1980s, which was later adapted into a two-part OVA anime in the 1990s, followed by a four-part OVA remake in 2012. However, for our fan art, we chose two official illustrations by Katsumi Michihara (the novel's illustrator) for June magazine back in the day. I must say, I absolutely LOVE Michihara's art style from that era; I'm fascinated by the delicacy of her lines and how vintage it looks even today.
For the first illustration we chose, I had to draw Iason Mink, the seme/top in the relationship, since @tegoshei loves uke/bottoms; I'm not complaining because... he's precisely my favorite character! I adored Iason from the moment I saw him in the OVAs, and later, my adoration only increased when I had the chance to read some of the novels, as I learned more about his unique personality... but let's leave that for a post where I talk specifically about the anime, or I'll end up rambling on 😆
Getting back to the fan art, I started, since my character was basically the background of the drawing. For such a delicate style, I didn't feel confident sketching directly digitally (because I draw with my finger and I still struggle with some lines), so I preferred to start in my sketchbook (traditionally), using a mechanical pencil. I think it was a good decision, since when I did the line art, I didn't make as many corrections as I thought I would. As you can see, I drew "Riki's doll" (the part by @tegoshei) in the sketch so it could serve as a guide and make sure my friend could easily find her drawing (I hope it helped her too 😌).

For the digitization, I took a photograph which I then opened in the app Medibang Paint, which is the one we're using for collaborations. After making the necessary changes to the line art, I proceeded to paint it. Finding the right shades was a bit tricky because I wanted to find the colors without having to use the eyedropper tool (me, always looking for ways to make myself suffer). I showed the drawing to a friend, and she wasn't convinced by the color of Iason's shirt; she thought it was too pink... but... it's almost the same shade as the illustration in June magazine! I loved it, and after asking @tegoshei what she thought, I was happy that she liked it as much as I did.

Next, I took care of shading and adding highlights. I'm not good at coloring, but I think it turned out pretty decent, especially the details on Iason's bracelet (that was my favorite part), as well as some white lines I added to the character's outlines.

Once I finished my part, I exported the file to send to my friend, and I must admit I was delighted with how she managed to fit Riki's cute little doll into Iason's hand. It looked perfect! She also sent me a GIF, which I'll show you as well, because I like the comparison between the two illustrations. Finally, I used the Line Camera app to give it an effect that I think makes the drawing look more retro (or maybe it's just my imagination, and I'm obsessed with that effect and use it for everything, haha).

I really enjoyed working on this collaboration, because as I mentioned, Ai no Kusabi is my all-time favorite, and working with @tegoshei is fantastic, so she'll be receiving 50% of the proceeds from this post, of course 😌 My friend will be posting her part soon, so I encourage you to check out her experience 😉

Yaaay~! Thanks, friend! You really did an awesome job this time, too! ^^
It was fun experimenting with how to add the doll in between his fingers, but yes... your drawing was a good guide as well, though I saw it late. hahaha I used it to adjust the doll's size a bit. :)
I like how you added our previous collabs to your post. I'll do that, too! It's nice to keep track of our collabs, because there'll be more in the future! ^^
Oh friend, I got a little too excited about the drawing, haha! I really love that illustration, so I'm thrilled with what we accomplished together 😇
Oh! I should have mentioned the sketch! It didn't even cross my mind, haha. I do check all the layers you create 😆 but I'm glad it was helpful in the end 😌
Hehe, yes, that way we can have quick access to what we've done, and anyone who wants to can see it too. Of course, the list will keep growing 😊
I'm both thrilled and proud of our journey so far. :)
No worries... I'm the lazy type who doesn't check all the layers, but I'm glad I noticed it in the end. haha It was pretty useful when I was doing the adjustments. ^^
For sure!!!

I love this creativity. Most especially the long embedded hair, how filling it is to the entire screen. Looks like a shield to them both. Don’t mind me, just a way I imagine the anime design. You did pretty well and amazing
The reference illustration is beautiful; I couldn't quite match the artist's work with that hair, but it was fun/frustrating trying to draw so many lines, haha. The good thing was that it saved us from having to draw a background! 😆 I'm so glad you liked my part of the fan art! 😌 Thank you so much for visiting my post and for your comment! 😉💚
That’s pretty amazing.
Well done and you are welcome
Oh, I already saw what your friend did in her post. This is nice really.
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you so much for watching our creative process and for your feedback! 😇💚
