The Animes of My Childhood

Childhood, that wonderful time of games, study and slacking; a time when responsibilities were as simple as getting home early, taking out the garbage, getting good grades and that was it.

In my house I was the only girl so my main entertainment was cable TV (that's how my love for music, movies, cartoons and anime).

That's why it's a pleasure for me to participate in the contest and tell about the anime I watched as a child and my experience watching them.

I must start with SPEED RACER that racing driver that I loved to see always winning. Spritle was my favotite character, that kid who was more outgoing than a drawer, a earthquake, but very intelligent, he magically ended up helping to Speed Racer (just like the mysterious racer). This series for me (at the time) was as exciting as watching a real nascar race and I loved how supportive almost all the characters were.

It was followed by CANDY CANDY an anime that seemed like a drama novel (in the best style of Brazilian and Colombian dramas). I must confess that sometimes it made me want to hit Candy over the head for dumb, but her misfortunes touched my heart and the story caught me so much that I even cried in a couple of episodes. No one can forget her love affairs with Anthony and Terry, but if Candy had lived in this era she would have been labeled a saint.

MARCO was another one that was saltier than the ocean. This anime for me was frustrating because no matter how hard he looked, Marco never found his mom, he always got a hint but never got it right. I didn't really like this series because I felt so sorry for this child who couldn't be with his mom.

HEIDI was another one that made my heart like a prune. I loved the positive attitude of this little girl and that with her humility she won everyone around her. This series also brought a couple of tears to my eyes.

Another one that I watched from a very young age was HELLO KITTY, this series has been forgotten but for many years it was iconic. This kitty was very sweet, playful and innocent, I watched it because I found it adorable and it was easy for a little girl to understand.

I met DORAEMON later. I loved that this cat robot from the future helped to Nobita who was another unfortunate in his life and was also more stubborn than a mule. In the end Doraemon would always pull something out of his magic pocket (similar to Mary Poppins' suitcase) to help his friend. I liked this series because Nobita was a very real character, he made mischief that kids normally do and it was easy to click with the stories in each episode.

Here comes my favorites: SAILOR MOON was charming, I liked that a school girl had magical powers and was secretly a heroine. I loved Serena's long hair, I really dreamed of having hair like that (because my mom was obsessed for short hair and always cut it to much).

**SKURA CARD CAPTOR was a series that I fell in love with. Everything about this series fascinated me. Sakura a girl in school age, very cooperative, with many friends, spoiled, discovers the magic cards that when going collecting them gave her more power. In spite of losing her mother, she was able to overcome her situation and to go ahead with her family and friends. I loved her friend Tomoyo, who always brought out a different dress in each battle with a card, Kero was very funny and friendly and Li who also had powers, secretly in love with Sakura. A very cute story, with an adorable aesthetic and some foods that provoked to get into the screen to eat them.

Last and at the top of my list is POKEMON I was a fan of this series for a long time. I had a book of collectible cards, played the computer or nintendo DS games (from my cousins), imagined that real pokemon existed and kept them as pets. When I turned 12, they made me a pool party with this theme: the cake was Squartle and everything had images of these little animals.

Now that I am an adult, I still love anime, I have watched a lot of them (even repeat my favorites) and I have broadened my tastes and demands in terms of stories and aesthetics. However, now I have to take care of adult responsibilities and my time for entertainment is much shorter.

Los Animes de mi Infancia

La infancia, esa maravillosa etapa de juegos, estudio y "echadera de carro"; etapa en que las responsabilidades eran tan sencillas como llegar temprano a casa, sacar la basura, sacar buenas notas y ya.

En mi casa yo fui la única niña por lo que mi principal entretenimiento era la televisión por cable (así empezó mi amor a la música, las películas, los dibujos animados y el anime).

Por eso es un gustazo para mi, participar en el concurso y contar sobre los animes que vi cuando era niña y mi experiencia al verlos.

Debo empezar con METEORO aquel piloto de carreras que me encantaba ver siempre ganar. El personaje que más me gustaba era Chispita, aquel niño que era más salido que una gaveta, un terremotico, pero muy inteligente, era uno de los personajes que mágicamente terminaba ayudando a meteoro (al igual que el corredor misterioso). Esta serie para mi (en su momento) fue tan emocionante como ver una verdadera carrera de nascar y me encantaba lo solidarios que eran casi todos los personajes.

Le sigue CANDY CANDY un anime que parecía la propia novela dramática (al mejor estilo de las novelas brasileras y colombianas). Debo confesar que a veces me provocaba darle un lepe en la cabeza a Candy por traga mosca, pero sus desventuras me llegaban al corazón y la historia me atrapó tanto que hasta lloré en un par de episodios. Nadie puede olvidar sus amores con Anthony y Terry, pero si Candy hubiera vivido en esta época la hubieran catalogado de santa.

MARCO fue otro que estaba más salado que el océano. Este anime para mi fue frustrante porque por más que buscara, Marco nunca encontraba a su mamá, siempre conseguía un indicio pero nunca la pegaba. Esta serie no me gustó mucho, porque me daba mucha lástima que un niño pudiera estar sin su mamá.

HEIDI fue otra que me puso el corazón como una ciruela pasa. Me encantaba la actitud positiva de esta niña y que con su humildad se ganaba a todos a su alrededor. Esta serie también me sacó un par de lágrimas.

Otra que veía desde muy pequeñita fue HELLO KITTY, esta serie ha quedado en el olvido pero por muchos años fue icónica. Esta gatita era muy dulce, juguetona e inocente, la veía porque me parecía adorable y era fácil de entender para una niña pequeña.

A DORAEMON lo conocí mucho más grande. Me encantaba que este robot del futuro con forma de gato ayudara a Nobita que era otro desafortunado en la vida y además era más terco que una mula. Al final siempre Doraemon sacaba algún objeto de su bolsillo mágico (parecido a la maleta de Mary Poppins) para ayudar a su amigo. Esta serie me gustaba porque Nobita era un personaje muy real, hacía tremenduras que hacen normalmente los niños y era fácil hacer click con las historias de cada episodio.

Aquí vienen mis favoritos de la infancia. SAILOR MOON era encantadora, me gustaba que una chica del colegio tuviera poderes mágicos y sea una heroína en secreto. Me encantaba el cabello largo de Serena, realmente soñaba con tener un cabello así (porque mi mamá tenía un fetiche con el cabello corto y siempre me lo cortaba mucho).

SAKURA CARD CAPTOR fue una serie que me enamoró. Todo de esta serie me fascinaba. Sakura una niña en edad escolar, muy colaboradora, con muchos amigos, consentida, descubre las cartas mágicas que al ir recolectandolas le daban más poder. A pesar de perder a su mamá, pudo sobrellevar su situación y salir adelante con su familia y amigos. Me encantaba su amiga Tomoyo, que siempre le sacaba un vestido diferente en cada batalla con una carta, Kero era muy cómico y pintoresco y Li que también tenía poderes, enamorado en secreto de Sakura. Una historia muy linda, con una estética adorable y unas comidas que provocaba meterse en la pantalla para comerlas.

Por último y en el top de mi lista se encuentra POKEMON fui una fan de esta serie por mucho tiempo. Tenía un libro de barajitas coleccionables, jugaba los juegos de computadora o nintendo DS (de mis primas), me imaginaba que los pokemones de verdad existían y los tenía como mascotas. Cuando cumplí 12 años, me hicieron una piscinada con éste tema: la torta era de Squartle y todo tenía imágenes de estos animalitos.

Ahora que soy adulta, todavía me encanta el anime, he visto muchísimos (hasta repito mis favoritos) he ampliado mis gustos y exigencias en cuanto a las historias y la estética. Sin embargo, hoy en día debo ocuparme de las responsabilidades de un adulto y mi tiempo para el entretenimiento es mucho más corto.
