Story Summary
A young girl Hataru takegawa gets lost in a magical forest while spending her summer vacation at her grandfather’s village. This forest is off limits to humans as it is home to the spirits of local mythology.
When Hataru needs help, she meets a mysterious young man named Gin. Although gin looks human he is actually a magical being. His body cannot tolerate human touch. He will dissolve if touched by a human.
A deep friendship and love gradually develops between them. Every summer Hataru returns to visit Gin. Their relationship grows stronger over the years but Gin's physical limitations are always a major obstacle to their love.
The story reaches its climax when an accident occurs. Gin accidentally touches a human while trying to protect a child which brings about the end of his existence. At the last moment Gin and Hataru embrace each other as Gin's body declares his love for Hataru before it dissolves.
My Explanation
The movie portrays the untouchable love of Gin and Hataru, a love that cannot be physically touched, but is filled with depth of emotion. The story teaches us that we should enjoy every moment of life because happiness does not always last. Gin's sacrifice and Hataru's heartbreaking separation highlight the depth of the relationship.
Direction: The simple yet profound story of the movie strikes a chord with the audience. Takahiro Ōmori's excellent direction makes it even more heartwarming.
