Hello, anime fans. We're back with more isekais, the kind of anime that people seem to love watching, as they are broadcast every season. This time, I'm going to talk about one isekai in particular that caught my attention, mainly because of how entertaining it is. It's one of those anime that is everything you expected to see from the beginning, but still manages to entertain you quite a bit. Based on the web novel series of the same name written by Ryō Hiromatsu, Uglymug, Epicfighter is produced by White Fox studio. Discover the most entertaining isekai of last summer's season.

Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Shigueru Yoshioka, an elderly man who used to work as a salesman for a company, but after being falsely accused of sexually abusing a teenager named Kyoko, he loses his job, falls into debt, and ends up confined to his apartment (like a true Hikikomori). One night, an advertisement appears on his laptop screen mentioning a kind of "teleportation spell" that will take him to a fantastic, medieval world. As if it were a game, the spell offers our protagonist the option to choose how to live in this world and choose his abilities and skills. Shigueru, determined, chooses to lose what little attractiveness he has and, in return, gains millions of extra points.

Una noche, un anuncio aparece en la pantalla de su laptop donde menciona sobre una especie de “hechizo de teletransportación” que lo llevará a un mundo fantástico y medieval. Como si fuera un juego, el hechizo le ofrece a nuestro protagonista la opción de elegir cómo vivir en este mundo y elegir sus habilidades y destrezas. Shigueru, decidido, elige perder el poquísimo atractivo que tiene y, a cambio, gana millones de puntos extra.

We have already talked at length about Isekai, which originated in the fantasy genre and became very popular in Japan and the East thanks to various fantasy stories in which the protagonist is incarnated or teleported to another world. It is currently considered both an overexploited subgenre and a poison that captures the public's attention and overshadows more original or authentic works that have a lot to offer. However, demand continues to grow despite criticism and widespread opinion in the West about this type of generic, low-budget work.
On this occasion, I'm not going to complain so much about Isekai as such, but rather talk about a particular anime that, despite having a generic plot, caught my attention nonetheless because of how entertaining it is. Uglymug, Epicfighter is one of those isekai anime that you might simply decide to pass up, both because of its premise and its enormous amount of clichés typical of any anime of this style. But even with all this, I personally assure you that it is worth watching, either because its story catches your attention or because of its very unique characters.

Ya antes hemos hablado más que suficiente sobre el Isekai, el cual nace del género de fantasía y se popularizó mucho en Japón y oriente gracias a diversas historias fantásticas donde el protagonista es encarnado o teletransportado a otro mundo. Actualmente es considerado tanto como un subgénero sobreexplotado como también un veneno que se apodera de la atención del público y deja de lado obras más originales o auténticas que tienen mucho por ofrecer. Sin embargo, la demanda sigue creciendo a pesar de las críticas y la opinión generalizada en occidente sobre este tipo de obras genéricas y de bajo presupuesto.
En esta ocasión no voy a quejarme tanto del isekai como tal sino que les hablaré de un anime en particular que, a pesar de tener una trama genérica, me llamó la atención igualmente por lo divertida que es. Uglymug, Epicfighter es de esos animes isekai que sencillamente pueden decidir pasarla de largo tanto por su premisa como también por su enorme cantidad de clichés típicos de cualquier anime de este estilo. Pero aún con todo esto, yo personalmente les aseguro que vale la pena ver, ya sea porque les llame la atención su historia como también sus personajes tan particulares que tiene.

This anime may not have the best plot you can find in an isekai, nor does it stray far from any other similar anime. Still, I think the way it's made manages to grab your attention, at least at first, thanks to its protagonist. I mean, just reading what I mentioned above is more than enough to get a clear idea of what Shigueru Yoshioka is like. Now imagine a protagonist like him in a fantasy world with adventurers transported from another world with unique abilities and skills.
Although by the end of the first episode he ends up becoming practically invincible, Shigueru has a physical appearance and characteristics that make him very different from the rest of his companions and adventurers from this other world. Many would say that he has many flaws that he voluntarily imposed on himself before being teleported, but others may also claim that because of this sacrifice, he possesses such a high level of skills that he is literally classified as an "absolute god". While this title imposed on him sounds quite exaggerated, it is true that the level of power he possesses is absurd.

Este anime puede que no tenga la mejor trama que puedas encontrar en un isekai, ni siquiera se aleja mucho de cualquier otro anime similar. Aún así, considero que la manera en la que está hecha consigue llamar la atención, al menos al principio gracias a su protagonista. O sea, ya con leer lo que les mencioné arriba es más que suficiente como para tener una idea clara de cómo es Shigueru Yoshioka. Ahora imagínate un protagonista como él en un mundo de fantasía con aventureros transportados del otro mundo con habilidades y destrezas particulares.
Si bien al final del primer episodio termina convirtiéndose en un ser prácticamente invencible, Shigueru posee un aspecto físico y unas características que lo hacen muy diferente al resto de sus compañeros y aventureros de este otro mundo. Muchos dirían que tiene muchos defectos que voluntariamente se impuso antes de ser teletransportado, pero otros también pueden afirmar que debido a este sacrificio posee un nivel tan alto de habilidades que es literalmente catalogado como un “dios absoluto”. Si bien suena bastante exagerado este título que le imponen, es cierto que es absurdo el nivel de poder que posee.

Even so, in the rest of the anime, what we see is not just an invincible Shigueru defeating evil and saving the world and all that; rather, we see a companion who is not very sociable for various reasons, but who helps the other members of his team to achieve their dreams. That's right, this story doesn't just focus on the typical "hero's journey" that we all know so well thanks to many generic isekais. It also tells us about the lives and deeds of the other members of the team of adventurers that Shigueru spends his time with. Each character has their own story, their own problems, their own secrets, and their own development.
Mind you, by this I don't mean that this anime has the best character development you can find in an isekai. But at least they have enough decent development to empathize a little with some of these characters. As some of my readers may already know, I like to see anime give time and prominence to other characters with potential, as this allows for a certain amount of variety, as well as introducing stories with valuable and interesting lessons. In the case of Uglymug, Epicfighter does just that, at least with one or two characters.

Aún así, en el resto del anime lo que podemos ver no es solo a un Shigueru invencible venciendo al mal y salvando al mundo y todo eso; sino que vemos más bien a un compañero no tan sociable por diversos motivos que ayuda a los demás miembros de su equipo a conseguir realizar sus sueños. Así es, esta historia no solo se centra en el típico “camino del héroe” que ya todos conocemos claramente gracias a muchos isekais genéricos. Sino que nos cuentan también la vida y obra de los demás miembros del equipo de aventureros con los que se la pasa Shigueru. Cada personaje tiene su historia, sus problemas, sus secretos y su desarrollo.
Ojo, con esto último no me quiero referir a que este anime tenga los mejores desarrollos de personajes que se puedan encontrar en un isekai. Pero al menos tienen un desarrollo lo suficientemente decente como para llegar a empatizar un poco con alguno de estos personajes. Como ya alguno de los que me leen sabrán, me gusta ver qué en un anime le den el tiempo y el protagonismo a otros personajes con potencial ya que así se puede conseguir cierta variedad, además de conocer historias con lecciones valiosas e interesantes. Con el caso de Uglymug, Epicfighter ocurre tal cual, al menos con uno que otro personaje.

To give an example, let's talk a little about Seika, one of the members of Shigueru's group. She is an innocent and cheerful teenager who enjoys her life to the fullest in this fantastic world full of monsters and adventurers. At first, she may seem like just another female character, but as time goes by and the episodes unfold, we gradually learn about her past and her life before she came to this world. This is where some of us who watched this anime easily empathized with Seika because of everything she has been through, and we began to understand the reasons behind her current personality.
Like her, there are other characters with stories and experiences full of drama, turbulent moments, and bad decisions that led them to ruin. One curious point I now see in this anime is that all the characters we meet here who have been sent to this world have had tragic lives in one way or another. I am also struck by how, as the episodes progress, we notice that each member of Shigueru's team has a certain connection to him and his past, which makes the question of their relationship and the decisions they make in this world as a team all the more interesting.

Por poner un ejemplo, hablemos un poco de Seika, una de los integrantes del grupo de Shigueru. Ella es una adolescente, inocente y alegre que disfruta al máximo su vida en este mundo fantástico repleto de monstruos y aventureros. Al principio puede llegar a verse como cualquier otro personaje femenino del montón, pero con el paso del tiempo y los episodios vamos conociendo poco a poco sobre el pasado y la vida de este personaje antes de venir a este mundo. Es aquí donde algunos de los que vimos este anime llegamos a empatizar fácilmente con Seika por todo lo que ha vivido y empezamos a entender el porqué de su personalidad actual.
Como ella, también hay otros casos de personajes con historias y vivencias repletas de drama, momentos turbulentos y malas decisiones que los llevaron a la ruina. Un punto curioso que veo ahora de este anime es que todos los personajes que conocemos aquí que han sido enviados a este mundo han tenido una vida trágica en alguno que otro sentido. También me llama la atención cómo con el paso de los episodios notamos que cada miembro del equipo de Shigueru tiene cierta relación con él y su pasado, lo cual hace que sea más interesante la cuestión de su relación y las decisiones que toman en este mundo como equipo.

Another thing I really like about this anime is how funny it is. I'm not just talking about the action scenes, but also the level of humor. Obviously, most of the jokes and funny moments are related to the protagonist's physical appearance and his inability to have any physical contact with women in this fantasy world. There's also almost no fanservice, which is much appreciated. It's also funny to see how they mix both action and this type of humor at the same time to show us absurd fights and quite entertaining moments. Mind you, I'm not saying that all the fights are like that, as there are a few battles that I found quite fascinating.
Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this anime. White Fox is a studio I've been following since I discovered Re:Zero (which I consider to be the best isekai anime I've ever seen). While I didn't expect much from this adaptation, it did manage to maintain a remarkable level of quality despite its comical style. The character design, the vivid color palette, the visual effects, the aesthetics, and the movement and fluidity effects are the most noteworthy aspects. There are also the sound effects, although they don't attract as much attention as the soundtrack. In short, this is another isekai anime that is different from most.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the fantasy, adventure, action, and comedy genres.

Otra cosa que me gusta mucho de este anime es lo divertida que es en sí. No solo lo digo por las escenas de acción que tiene, sino también por el nivel de humor que posee. Evidentemente, la mayoría de chistes o momentos graciosos están relacionados al aspecto físico del protagonista y su incapacidad de poder tener ningún contacto físico con una mujer en este mundo de fantasía. También que no hay casi nada de fanservice, cosa que se agradece. Da risa también ver cómo mezclan tanto la acción como este tipo de humor al mismo tiempo para mostrarnos combates absurdos y momentos bastante entretenidos. Ojo, no digo que todas las peleas sean así, ya que hay una que otra batalla que me fascinó bastante.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. White Fox es un estudio que he seguido desde que conocí Re:Zero (el cual considero es el mejor anime isekai que he visto). Si bien no esperaba gran cosa de esta adaptación, sí consiguió mantener un nivel destacable de calidad a pesar de su estilo cómico. El diseño de los personajes, la paleta de colores vivos, los efectos visuales, la estética y los efectos de movimiento y fluidez son de lo más destacable. También están los efectos de sonido, aunque no llegan a llamar tanto la atención cómo su banda sonora. En fin, este es otro anime isekai distinto a la mayoría.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, aventura, acción y comedia.

La verdad es que suelo huir un poco de los isekais últimamente porque, como bien dices, el género está súper explotado y cuesta encontrar algo que no se sienta genérico. Lo de que el protagonista elija ser feo a cambio de "stats" me parece un punto de partida muy gracioso y diferente al típico héroe perfecto. Me lo apunto definitivamente en la lista de pendientes, ¡gracias por la recomendación!
Yo me salto los isekais que sean de lo más genéricos posible, o sea, malísimos. Es por eso que cuando decido hablar de animes isekai modernos procuro escoger entre los que, para mí, sean los más auténticos e interesantes para ver.
