Hello everyone, anime fan friends, I hope you're doing great, this time I want to share a new review, I'll talk to you about the anime: Twin Star Exorcists... I remember when it started playing, you know? It was like the new up and coming shonen, the one that was supposed to be a huge hit, I was all in. Then one day, a friend of mine texted me, he was like, "Hey dude, I see you have Twin Star on your queue. Take it off. It's garbage." In my infinite wisdom, I was like, "Nah, what does he know?" I thought the concept was brilliant, didn't see how it could go wrong. Well, I should have listened. Fast forward a few months, Spring break comes around, and I'm like, "Great! I have time, I'll just binge watch one anime to catch up." And I pick Twin Star Exorcists, the plan was to finish it in a couple weeks. Guys, it took me almost three months, this anime is... it's a slog. It's so incredibly boring at times that I could barely hit the "next episode" button.

My friend was totally right, and the thing that frustrates me the most is that it starts off so well. Honestly! The first 20 episodes or so, they really hook you in. It has that classic, overflowing shonen energy that we all love. Remember that first big fight where Rokuro, our protagonist, pulls out his shonen powers and nearly crushes that Kegare in one punch? It was amazing! I love it when the protagonist has an absurd moment of power early on. It makes you think, "Okay, this is going to be epic!" The problem is, after those 20 episodes, the show hits the brakes so hard that it nearly goes off the road. It completely fizzles out for about seven or eight episodes, and from there, things get... complicated.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos del anime, espero que estén genial, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré del anime: Twin Star Exorcists.. recuerdo cuando empezó a sonar, ¿sabes? Era como el nuevo shonen emergente, el que se suponía que iba a ser un gran éxito, yo estaba totalmente convencido.. entonces, un día, un amigo mío me mandó un mensaje, me dijo: "Oye, tío, veo que tienes Twin Star en tu lista. Quítala. Es una basura".. yo, en mi infinita sabiduría, pensé: "Nah, ¿qué sabrá él?", el concepto me parecía genial, no veía cómo podía salir mal.. bueno, pues... debería haberle hecho caso.. avancemos unos meses, llegan las vacaciones de primavera y pienso: "¡Perfecto! Tengo tiempo, voy a maratonear un solo anime para ponerme al día".. y elijo Twin Star Exorcists, el plan era terminarlo en un par de semanas.. chicos, tardé casi tres meses, este anime es... es un trabajo duro.. es tan increíblemente aburrido a ratos que me costaba darle al botón de "siguiente episodio".

Mi amigo tenía toda la razón, y lo que más me frustra es que empieza muy bien. ¡De verdad! Los primeros 20 episodios más o menos, te enganchan.. tiene esa energía shonen clásica y desbordante que a todos nos encanta. ¿Recuerdan esa primera gran pelea en la que Rokuro, nuestro protagonista, saca sus poderes de Shonen y de un solo golpe casi aplasta a ese Kegare, fue increíble! Me encanta cuando el protagonista tiene un momento de poder absurdo al principio, Te hace pensar: "¡Vale, esto va a ser épico!". El problema es que, después de esos 20 episodios, la serie pisa el freno con tanta fuerza que casi se sale de la carretera, se desinfló por completo durante unos siete u ocho episodios, y a partir de ahí, la cosa se vuelve... complicada.

Let's see, the main problem, and it's something that really pisses me off about a lot of really long anime, is the pacing... the story of Twin Star Exorcists doesn't move forward, people, it drags... they spend an entire lifetime "developing" the protagonists, Rokuro and Benio, in a ton of chapters that seem important but in the end add up to nothing. I swear, this same story could have been told perfectly, and much better, in about 24 chapters if they'd cut out all the fluff. But no, they gave us 50 episodes where for long, long stretches, absolutely nothing happens... the romance, which is supposed to be the heart of all this... ugh! It takes forever to get going... when it finally seems like something's going to happen, boom! The handbrake hits and it stays there, stuck, for almost the entire series. It was like sitting back and watching the grass grow, literally.

And this is where things get worse: the anime doesn't even adapt the entire manga... at one point, they just said "you know what? Fuck it" and invented their own path, I get it, sometimes you have to do it when you get back to the original source material, but here it felt ugly, it felt like a rip-off. The original story had potential, good characters, cool fights... it deserved more love, people... it deserved a better plan, I don't know, split it into seasons to give the manga a chance to move forward, but no, they decided to pull an ending out of their sleeve and the result... well, we'll talk about that later. Let's talk about the protagonists and their powers... like I was saying, Rokuro starts out as your typical tank, the one who hits hard, he has this Kegare arm, right? But only his right one. ONLY HIS RIGHT ONE! I mean, the guy can only throw right hooks. What logic does that have? And then they give her a power-up that is... dumb...

Meanwhile, Benio is the one who knows how to fight, she's fast, she's agile, she has her two swords... honestly, she was much more believable... she had technique, she dodged, she moved... it was a pleasure to watch her fight. Rokuro just... threw punches and that's it. And of course, as he improves, she can't be left behind... but instead of giving her something fair, what does she get? New legs. But not just one, but both! I mean, she gets the whole package! A much better deal, if you ask me... then there's their great combined power: when they shake hands, they "resonate" and boom!, power surge... sounds cool, right? Well, it's the most useless thing in the world if they can't shake hands, if the fight separates them, what do they do? No, nothing. It's useless.

A ver, el problema principal, y es algo que de verdad me revienta de muchos animes larguísimos, es el ritmo.. la historia de Twin Star Exorcists no avanza, gente, se arrastra.. se pasan una vida entera "desarrollando" a los protas, a Rokuro y a Benio, en un montón de capítulos que parecen importantes pero que al final no suman nada, se los juro que esta misma historia, la contaban perfecto, y mucho mejor, en unos 24 capítulos si le quitaban toda la paja. Pero no, nos metieron 50 episodios donde por largos, larguísimos ratos, no pasa absolutamente nada.. el romance, que se supone que es el corazón de todo esto… ¡uf! Tarda una eternidad en arrancar.. cuando por fin parece que va a pasar algo, ¡pum!, freno de mano y se queda ahí, estancado, por casi toda la serie, era como sentarse a ver cómo crece el pasto, literal.

Y acá es donde la cosa se pone peor: el anime ni siquiera adapta todo el manga.. en un punto, simplemente dijeron "¿saben qué?, a la mierda", y se inventaron su propio camino, yo entiendo, a veces toca hacerlo cuando alcanzas el material original, pero aquí se sintió feo, se sintió como una estafa. La historia original tenía potencial, buenos personajes, peleas chidas… se merecía más cariño, gente.. se merecía un mejor plan, no sé, dividirlo en temporadas para darle chance al manga de avanzar, pero no, decidieron sacarse un final de la manga y el resultado… bueno, de eso ya hablaremos. Hablemos de los protas y sus poderes.. como les decía, Rokuro empieza siendo el típico tanque, el que pega duro, tiene su bracito este de Kegare, ¿no? Pero solo el derecho. ¡SOLO EL DERECHO! O sea, el tipo solo puede meter derechazos. ¿Qué lógica tiene eso? Y luego le dan un power-up que es.. tonto..

Mientras tanto, Benio es la que sí sabe pelear, es rápida, es ágil, tiene sus dos espadas… sinceramente, ella era mucho más creíble.. tenía técnica, esquivaba, se movía… era un gusto verla pelear. Rokuro solo… tiraba golpes y ya. Y claro, como él mejora, ella no se puede quedar atrás.. pero en lugar de que le den algo justo, ¿qué le toca? Piernas nuevas. Pero no una, ¡las dos! O sea, ¡a ella sí le dan el paquete completo! Un trato mucho mejor, si me preguntan.. luego está su gran poder combinado: cuando se dan la mano, "resuenan" y ¡boom!, subidón de poder.. suena cool, ¿verdad? Pues es la cosa más inútil del mundo si no se pueden dar la mano, si la pelea los separa, ¿qué hacen? No, nada. No sirve pa' nada.

And then there’s the time jump… my god, out of nowhere, from one episode to the next, I was like: “Hey, don’t they look taller? What’s the matter?”.. they don’t explain a thing, they’re taller. And that’s it! NOTHING ELSE changed! I mean, look at shows like Naruto and Shippuden… there you see a change! In the design, in the maturity, in the hairstyle… in something, for God’s sake! Here it’s the same face, the same clothes, just stretched out upwards, it’s the lamest and most pointless thing I’ve ever seen… they just throw it at you like it’s nothing: “Oh, yeah, two years have passed.” So? And what the hell happened in those two years? Apparently, nothing worthwhile… but the icing on the cake of frustration are the villains and the clichés.

You have no idea how many times I found myself rolling my eyes, listening to a villain utter the typical: “I am all-powerful and you are insects!” or "It's no use trying to win!"... my personal favorite, the one that made me want to throw the controller at the screen: "Hahaha, it was all part of my master plan!" And just when you think it can't get any more cliché, BOOM! along comes some other dude and all, "But your master plan was part of MY SUPER master plan ALL ALONG! I was just using you this whole time, you cheap villain!"

It got to the point where I was like, just sitting there, not caring, watching them pull one stupid thing after another out of their sleeves... which brings me to the final fight. If there's one thing that sums up everything wrong with this adaptation, it's the ending. Our heroes, Rokuro and Benio, are standing there, holding hands, pointing the guns at the ultimate enemy... the enemy... what does it do? Nothing. It literally just stands there, sneering at them. “Hahaha, they're not going to make it, I'm not going to touch them, but good luck with that, he just stands there the whole damn time! While they're concentrating... if I were that villain, they'd be dead in two seconds, it's such an unearned ending, so anticlimactic... it felt empty, hollow, like it left you with nothing.”

Y luego está el salto temporal.. dios mío, de la nada, de un capítulo para otro, yo estaba como: “Oye, ¿no se ven como más altos? ¿Qué pedo?”.. no te explican un carajo, son más altos. ¡Y ya! ¡No cambió NADA MÁS! A ver, vean series como Naruto con Shippuden.. ahí sí ves un cambio! En el diseño, en la madurez, en el peinado… ¡en algo, por Dios! Aquí es la misma cara, la misma ropa, nomás estirada pa’ arriba, es la cosa más floja y sin sentido que he visto.. te lo sueltan así como si nada: “Ah, sí, pasaron dos años”. ¿Y? ¿Y qué chingados pasó en esos dos años? Aparentemente, nada que valga la pena.. pero la cereza del pastel de la frustración son los villanos y los clichés.

Ustedes no tienen idea de cuántas veces me encontré poniendo los ojos en blanco, escuchando a un villano soltar el típico: "¡Soy todopoderoso y ustedes son unos insectos!" o "¡Es inútil que intenten ganar!".. mi favorito, el que me daba ganas de aventar el control a la pantalla: "¡Jajaja, todo era parte de mi plan maestro!". Y justo cuando crees que no puede ser más cliché, ¡PUM!, aparece otro wey que dice: "¡Pero tu plan maestro era parte de MI SÚPER plan maestro DESDE EL PRINCIPIO! ¡Te estuve usando todo este tiempo, villano de pacotilla!".

Llegó un punto en el que yo ya estaba así, sentado en la silla, sin que me importara nada, viendo cómo se sacaban una estupidez tras otra de la manga.. eso me lleva a la pelea final. Si hay algo que resume todo lo que está mal con esta adaptación, es el final. Nuestros héroes, Rokuro y Benio, están ahí parados, agarrados de la mano, apuntándole al enemigo final.. el enemigo… ¿qué hace? Nada. Literalmente se queda ahí parado, burlándose de ellos. “Jajaja, no lo van a lograr, no los voy a tocar, pero suerte con eso, se queda ahí parado todo el maldito rato! Mientras ellos se concentran.. si yo fuera ese villano, estarían muertísimos en dos segundos, es un final tan poco ganado, tan anticlimático… se sintió vacío, hueco, como que no te deja nada.

Before, there was a personal reason to beat your ass, a story of betrayal, of pain... seeing them against Yuto at the beginning was much better, the series needed more of that kind of fights, and if all the chaos wasn't enough, near the end, the plot gets so dark and a twist is pulled out of nowhere that you're left thinking "what the fuck am I watching?" It's supposed to be a series for a younger audience, and suddenly, bam! They throw in this super dark story that's completely irrelevant, that feels super gratuitous and makes the whole thing ridiculous, at that point, I didn't even know what to think about this anime... now, to be fair, not everything is crap. There is one thing they did right: the sound, the soundtrack, which at first threw me off because it's almost pure dubstep, but it actually works surprisingly well.

The fights look awesome, it gives a good atmosphere, and after 50 chapters, I swear I'm stuck on several songs... the openings and endings are also gems... the music is awesome. So, what's my final verdict? I give it a 5/10... and I'm feeling very generous, the story is very slow, the characters are clichés with legs, and while it had its good moments, especially at the beginning, the truth is that it's very poorly made... it's an anime that you can bear, seriously, your time is worth more, this is one of those anime that I watched just to kill time, and honestly, it wasn't that good even for that. Antes había una razón personal para darse en la madre, una historia de traición, de dolor.. verlos contra Yuto al principio fue mucho mejor, de ese tipo de peleas necesitaba más la serie, por si todo el desmadre no fuera suficiente, casi al final, la trama se pone tan oscura y se saca un giro tan de la nada que te quedas con cara de “¿qué chingados estoy viendo?”. Se supone que es una serie para un público más joven, y de repente, ¡zas!, te meten un rollo súper oscuro que no viene a cuento de nada, que se siente súper gratuito y hace que todo se vuelva ridículo, en ese punto, yo ya no sabía ni qué pensar de este anime.. ahora, para ser justos, no todo es mierda. Hay algo que sí hicieron bien: el sonido, la banda sonora, que al principio me sacó de onda porque es casi puro dubstep, la verdad es que funciona sorprendentemente bien.

Le queda cabrón a las peleas, le da buen ambiente y, después de 50 capítulos, se los juro que se me pegaron varias rolas.. los openings y los endings también son una joyita.. la música es un puntazo. Entonces, ¿cuál es mi veredicto final? Le doy un 5/10.. y me estoy viendo bien generoso, la historia es lentísima, los personajes son clichés con patas y aunque tuvo sus momentitos buenos, sobre todo al principio, la verdad es que está muy mal hecha.. es un anime que te puedes aguantar, en serio, su tiempo vale más, este es de esos animes que vi nomás para matar el tiempo, y la verdad, ni para eso estuvo tan bueno.
