Hayao Miyazaki es un guionista, director, artista y creador de películas animadas nacido en Japón. Probablemente es el más conocido realizador filmográfico de ese país después de Akira Kurosawa.
Miyazaki, a cargo del estudio Ghibli, realizó varios filmes que labraron el camino que más adelante lo llevaría a ser considerado un genio de la animación y a su estudio uno de los mejores de la materia en el mundo.
Fueron muchos los grandes trabajos de este legendario estudio que hasta la fecha ha elaborado un total de 21 obras. Todas han pasado al Valhala de la historia cinematográfica, pero hubo que recorrer un largo camino hasta ese punto.
El Estudio Ghibli debía revelarse ante el mundo demostrando su capacidad al hacer uno de los filmes de animación más espectaculares hechos hasta ese momento. Miyazaki estaba decidido a lograrlo, y eso le llevó a crear la obra sobre la que voy a hablar en este artículo.
La princesa Mononoke logró convertirse en la película japonesa más exitosa de su época. ¿Qué pudo llevar a este filme a catapultar uno de los estudios de animación más respetados del mundo hoy en día?
Para responder a esa pregunta he decidido elaborar una lista de siete cosas que hacen que La Princesa Mononoke sea una película que todos deben ver.
La gran calidad de sus personajes
Para hacer una gran historia necesitas buenos protagonistas. Ashitaka cumple al hacerse la pieza central de todo el desarrollo, pero a su vez se nos cuenta con cierta profundidad la evolución de otros personajes que se vuelven el foco central en algunos momentos.
Durante la película se nos hace entender con claridad quienes son los personajes principales y cuáles son sus objetivos. Y todos los arcos fueron muy bien ejecutados. Ninguno sobra o falta, todos tienen un propósito en la trama.
La propia princesa Lobo tiene un desarrollo complicado. Pasa de rechazar totalmente a Ashitaka, casi matándolo, a formar una pequeña alianza con él. La experiencia de San hace evidente como le afecta emocionalmente el grave conflicto al que ha sido arrojada, y Ashitaka se vuelve su gran apoyo.
Por otro lado, Lady Eboshi también llega a mostrarse como un personaje con el que puedes empatizar a pesar de que es claramente quien hace sufrir a San. Eso, sencillamente, no es nada fácil de lograr.
Miyazaki transporta limpiamente entre uno y otro punto de vista. Te construye un mundo que se siente muy vivo con personajes que se siente muy reales.
Es excelente el nivel de carisma particular de cada uno de los personajes que llegamos a explorar. Al final no podemos odiar a ninguno. Cada quien tiene válidas razones para perseguir sus objetivos y actúan como podría actuar cualquier persona en su situación.
La ambigüedad tras las motivaciones de los personajes principales hace aún más disfrutable de la película. No hay nadie realmente bueno o malo por completo, cada uno puede tener facetas que pueden considerarse buenas o malas sin que ninguna de estas defina totalmente su carácter.
Música y sonido
La música de La Princesa Mononoke posee, como toda la de la filmografía Ghibli, una auténtica maravilla de banda sonora. Los temas musicales cumplen perfectamente su cometido al hacerte comprometer más con la experiencia que el filme intenta crear.
Pero no es solo la música lo que hace de La Princesa Mononoke una gran experiencia sonora, sino que el audio de ambientación de los escenarios que se muestran en la película logran transportarte dentro de ellos.

Resulta más que evidente que esta película está plagada de referencias a grandes leyendas y fábulas de la cultura japonesa y oriental.
Podemos encontrar que las deidades, o espíritus existentes en el bosque, guardan cierto parecido con algunas de sus leyendas más populares. Hayao Miyazaki destaca por su capacidad de transformar viejos conceptos de la literatura fantástica a un formato cinematográfico convincente.
El resultado de esa amalgama es una mitología distintiva y única que hace aún más especial la historia de esta película.
El valor del trabajo del estudio Ghibli
El Estudio Ghibli es sin lugar a dudas uno de los más importantes estudios de animación de la historia del cine. Su estilo único y original es un auténtico deleite, y ha sido logrado por la mano de grandes genios creativos.
Cada uno de los filmes realizados por este estudio ha sido una obra hecha por artistas talentosísimos que dedicaron meses, e incluso años, a llevar hasta nosotros cada una de las visiones planteadas por sus directores.
La Princesa Mononoke fue uno de los trabajos más complejos que llegó a realizar el estudio Ghibli, y el resultado final es sin duda una gran muestra de lo lejos que la animación puede llegar con las habilidades, la creatividad y el empeño que muy pocos equipos de artistas pueden ofrecer.
Su arte y animación
Probablemente uno de los aspectos mejor valorados del Estudio Ghibli es su maravilloso sentido de la belleza en su espléndido arte. Esta película parce ser la niña mimada del estudio en ese aspecto.
La princesa Mononoke se cansa de brindarnos escenas que quitan el aliento con animaciones magistralmente elaboradas. Todo goza de una gran estética que deslumbra en cada cuadro.
La fluidez de la animación, el nivel de detalle, la paleta de colores, el estilo de dibujo... Cada elemento visual puesto en el filme fue cuidado minuciosamente hasta lograr un espectáculo que resulta una grandiosa obra de arte.

La moraleja de la historia
Al final queda muy claro que existe una fuerte crítica social en el trasfondo de todo lo narrado. Todo gira en torno a un conflicto entre los seres humanos y la naturaleza.
La naturaleza, en este caso, no es puesta en riesgo por una ambición egoísta e indiscriminada. Las razones son muy claras y llegan a tener cierto carácter noble.
Eso es un dato importante para entender esta obra. Es necesario saber cuidar de los entornos que nos dan vida, pero ¿a qué costo?
Los humanos usan los recursos que necesitan para sostener el progreso de su evolución. El precio de la civilización es el sacrificio de espacios naturales. Lugares que tenían una gigantesca mística ancestral llena de vida y color. Y ahora casi no hacen sentir nada más que vacío...
La lucha por nuestra supervivencia nos exige consumir de los recursos que el planeta nos provee. No es posible que dejemos de usar los medios naturales para nuestro beneficio, pero el filme nos invita a evitar hacer daños innecesarios.
Es una historia muy bien contada
De todos los elementos que componen esta gran obra el apartado escrito es para mí el más exquisito. La Princesa Mononoke tiene un guion que está fantásticamente elaborado de principio a fin.
Uno de los aspectos impactantes de Princesa Mononoke es que durante toda la película sigue existiendo una acción continua donde la trama no deja de avanzar hacia adelante. Se enfoca en eventos que ocurren en el momento, y a partir de allí saca todo el trasfondo que necesita.
Sin embargo, la película llega a ser realmente completa al profundizar correctamente en el mundo que nos muestra. Eso hace que la trama sea bastante densa, pero no por ello difícil de digerir.
La historia se desarrolla de un modo que hace sencillo entender hacia dónde va en todo momento sin pecar de ser predecible. El ritmo narrativo es ideal, y encuentra la forma de resumir lo que fácilmente pudo ser una película de tres horas.

Miyazaki, in charge of the Ghibli studio, made several films that paved the way that would later lead him to be considered a genius of animation and his studio to be one of the best in the world.
Many were the great works of this legendary studio, which to date has produced a total of 21 works that have gone down in the Valhalla of cinematographic history. But it was a long road to get there.
Studio Ghibli had to reveal itself to the world by demonstrating its ability to create one of the most spectacular animated films ever made. Miyazaki was determined to achieve that, and that led him to create the work I'm going to talk about in this article.
Princess Mononoke managed to become the most successful Japanese film of its time. What could have led this film to catapult one of the most respected animation studios in the world today?
To answer that question I've decided to put together a list of seven things that make The Princess Mononoke a must-see movie for everyone.
The high quality of its characters
To make a great story you need good protagonists. Ashitaka fulfills by becoming the centerpiece of the whole development, but at the same time, we are told with some depth the evolution of other characters that become the central focus at some points.
Throughout the film, we are made to clearly understand who the main characters are and what their goals are. And all the arcs were very well executed. None is useful or missing, they all have a purpose in the plot.
Princess Wolf herself has a complicated development. She goes from totally rejecting Ashitaka, almost killing him, to forming a small alliance with him. San's experience makes it evident how she is emotionally affected by the severe conflict she has been thrown into, and Ashitaka becomes her great support.
On the other hand, Lady Eboshi also comes to show herself as a character you can empathize with even though she is clearly the one who makes San suffer. That, quite simply, is not easy to achieve at all.
Miyazaki transports cleanly between the two points of view. He builds you a world that feels very much alive with characters that feel very realistic.
The level of charisma particular to each of the characters we get to explore is excellent. In the end we can't hate any of them. Everyone has valid reasons for pursuing their goals and they act as anyone in their situation might act.
The ambiguity behind the motivations of the main characters makes the film even more enjoyable. There is no one truly good or bad all the way around, each can have facets that can be considered good or bad without any of these totally defining their personalities.
Músic and sound
The music in The Princess Mononoke has, like all of Ghibli's filmography, a truly wonderful soundtrack. The musical themes do their job perfectly by making you more engaged with the experience that the film is trying to create.
But it's not just the music that makes The Princess Mononoke a great listening experience, but the ambient audio of the scenes shown in the movie manages to transport you inside them.

The result of that amalgamation is distinctive and unique mythology that makes the story of this film all the more special.
The Value of Studio Ghibli's Work
Studio Ghibli is undoubtedly one of the most important animation studios in the history of cinema. Its unique and original style is a true delight and has been achieved by the hand of great creative geniuses.
Each of the films made by this studio has been the work of extremely talented artists who dedicated months, and even years, to bring to us each of the visions proposed by its directors.
Princess Mononoke was one of the most complex works ever made by Studio Ghibli, and the final result is undoubtedly a great example of how far animation can go with the skills, creativity, and commitment that very few teams of artists can offer.
Its animation and art
Probably one of the most highly rated aspects of Studio Ghibli is its wonderful sense of beauty in its splendid art. This film seems to be the studio's favourite in that regard.
Princess Mononoke tirelessly delivers breathtaking scenes with masterfully crafted animation. Everything has a great aesthetic that dazzles in every frame.
The fluidity of the animation, the level of detail, the color palette, the drawing style? Every visual element put into the film was meticulously cared for to achieve a spectacle that in itself is a great work of art.

The moral of the story
In the end there is a strong social critique in the background of everything narrated. All revolves around a conflict between humans and nature.
Nature, in this case, is not put at risk by selfish and indiscriminate ambition. The reasons are very clear and have a certain noble character.
That is an important fact to understand this work. It is necessary to know how to take care of the environments that give us life, but at what cost?
Humans use the resources they need to sustain the progress of their evolution. The price of civilization is the sacrifice of natural spaces. Places that had a gigantic ancestral mystique full of life and color. And now they hardly make us feel anything but emptiness...
The struggle for our survival requires us to consume the resources that the planet provides us. We can't stop using natural means for our benefit, but the film invites us to avoid doing unnecessary damage.
It is a very well-told story
Of all the elements that make up this great work the written section is for me the most exquisite. Princess Mononoke has a script that is fantastically crafted from start to finish.
One of the striking aspects of Princess Mononoke is that throughout the film there remains continuous action where the plot never stops moving forward. It focuses on events that happen at the moment, and from there it draws all the backstory it needs.
However, the film becomes really complete by properly delving into the world it shows us. That makes the plot quite dense, but not for that reason difficult to digest.
The story unfolds in a way that makes it easy to understand where it is going at all times without being predictable. The narrative pacing is ideal, and it finds a way to summarize what could easily have been a three-hour movie.
