Misteriosos asesinatos por ghouls (caníbales desconocidos) tienen lugar en Tokio. Un día, el estudiante de 18 años Kaneki Ken conoce a una chica en un restaurante y la invita a salir. Luego de una interesante cita, Kaneki se ofrece a llevarla a su casa, pero al entrar a un callejón, es atacado por una chica que resulta ser una Ghoul. Durante el ataque, Kaneki fue salvado por un destello de luz antes de que los ghouls pudieran matarlo, pero resultó herido de muerte.

Mysterious murders by ghouls (unknown cannibals) take place in Tokyo. One day, 18-year-old student Kaneki Ken meets a girl in a restaurant and asks her out. After an interesting date, Kaneki offers to take her home, but upon entering an alley, he is attacked by a girl who turns out to be a Ghoul. Debido a sus graves heridas, tuvo que someterse a un trasplante de urgencia de unos de los órganos de Rize la misma chica que lo había atacado porque los médicos desconocían su identidad y creían que había muerto. Kaneki se convirtió en una mezcla de humano/Ghoul, y desde entonces ha tenido que mantenerse alejado de los humanos.
