From around the end of November, Christmas markets begin all across Germany. I thought that people outside of Europe, in particular, might enjoy seeing photos of them, so I decided to share a post.
Chemnitz Christmas Market
The first Christmas market I visited this year was in Chemnitz, where I was staying for a workshop. Because the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains), famous for their woodcraft, are nearby, there were many wooden craft stalls, which made my daughter and me very excited.
We walked through the market at night, and then my child insisted on going again the next morning. We ended up delaying our return train by one hour… and then another hour… and really enjoyed ourselves.
I had my first cup of mulled wine of the season there. The mug was tall and slim, decorated with a nutcracker motif that my daughter loves, we gave up deposit and brought it home as a souvenir.
Leipzig Christmas Market
This is the Christmas market in the city where I live, and I visit it every year. Recently, on a warm evening when the temperature went up to 13°C, I went there with my daughter. Everyone seemed to have the same idea, and it was very crowded. I usually don’t like crowds, but this is one thing I end up going to every year anyway.
We ate French fries, then had crêpes for dessert, and walked around looking at the stalls. I really wanted to eat lángos, a Hungarian fried bread topped with cheese and vegetables, but it was just people, people, people… I had it another day when I passed through the market at lunchtime. It was delicious!
If your schedule allows, I recommend visiting Christmas markets in several shorter visits rather than all at once. Writing this made me realize how lucky I am to have a large Christmas market in the city where I live.
A Local Christmas Market in a Small Town
A friend of mine who makes Takoyaki (Japanese salty round pancake with octopus) told me they would have a stall at a Christmas market in a small town about 30 minutes away by train, so I went to visit with my daughter. They are moving to west part of Germany, so this was their last time selling at a market close to where we live.
Recently, not only at Christmas markets but also at regular farmers’ markets, it has become common to see international food stalls. Takoyaki on a cold day warmed us from the stomach. How nice it was! I'll miss their Takoyaki.
Small-town markets are very local: lots of familiar faces, and vendors exchanging food with each other. It felt very warm and homey. Thanks to my friend, I was glad we could experience that atmosphere.
Where to Next…?
We had been talking about spending Christmas in Prague as family, but because there has been a hepatitis warning, now we are thinking about spending Christmas in Berlin for the first time in a while.

11月の終わり頃からドイツではクリスマスマーケットが始まります。ヨーロッパの外の人は特に写真をおもしろがってくれるかなと思い、投稿することにしました。
ケムニッツのクリスマスマーケット
今年一番はじめに訪れたのは、ワークショップで滞在したケムニッツのクリスマスマーケットでした。木工で有名なエルツ山脈が近いということで、たくさんの木工スタンドが並んでいて、子供と一緒に大興奮。夜にクリスマスマーケットを一通り見て、翌朝もまた見に行きたいというので足を運んで、帰る電車を一時間遅らせ、さらにまた一時間遅らせ・・・楽しみました。
私は今年一杯目のホットワインを楽しみました。カップの形が縦長で子供が大好きなくるみ割り人形のモチーフがユニークだったので、お土産に持ち帰りました。
ライプツィヒのクリスマスマーケット
私が住んでいる街のクリスマスマーケットで、毎年訪れています。先日13度まで気温の上がった暖かい日の夕方に子供と見に行ってきました。みんな考えることは同じで大賑わい、普段は人混みが苦手ですが、こればかりは毎年行ってしまうんですよね。
子供とフライドポテトを食べて、デザートにクレープを食べて、お店を見て歩きました。私はランゴスというハンガリーの揚げパンを食べたかったのですが、人、人、人・・・で後日お昼にマーケットを通りかかった時に食べました。おいしい！
日程が許すのであればクリスマスマーケットは何度かに分けていくのがおすすめです。そういう意味では住んでいる街に大きなクリスマスマーケットがあるって恵まれているんだなと書きながら思いました。
小さな街の地元のクリスマスマーケット
たこ焼きを焼いている友人が、うちから電車で30分ほどの小さな町のクリスマスマーケットに出店するとのことで、子供と一緒に遊びに行ってきました。というのも彼らはドイツ西部に引っ越してしまうので、うちから近いエリアではこれが最後の出店だったのです。
最近では、クリスマスマーケットに限らず、普段のファーマーズマーケットなどでもインターナショナルなスタンドが出店しています。寒い日のたこ焼きはお腹のそこから温まりました。ああでも来年はビールを飲みながらたこ焼きを食べられないのかと思うとちょっとしんみり。
小さな町のマーケットは、地元の人がたくさん来ていて、みんな顔見知り、スタンド同士は食べ物交換しまくりな感じで、とてもアットホームでした。友達のおかげでそんな雰囲気を観にこられてよかったです。
次はどこへ・・？
クリスマスはプラハで過ごそうと話していたのですが、肝炎の警告が出ているので、近場のベルリンで久しぶりにクリスマスもいいねと家族と話しています。
