My paintings are my own, so they do not need to be handed down, but there are many traditional crafts in my area, for example. I think they must be handed down, including their techniques.

There is a person I am acquainted with who makes wood carvings of Buddhist statues. He originally studied Western-style painting at an art college. I think this is a bold change of career, but at any rate, there is a shortage of labor and successors in the world of traditional crafts today. Although I did not have the qualifications to enter the world of traditional crafts, I would like those who can do so to carry on the beauty of old things.

私の絵は私だけのものだから、継承されなくてもいいのだが、例えば私の住む地では伝統工芸品がたくさんある。それらは技術も含め継承されなければならないと思う。

私が面識のある人で、木彫で仏像を作っている人がいる。もとは美大で洋画を学んでいたそうだ。思い切った転身だと思うが、とにかく今の伝統工芸の世界は人手不足、後継者不足である。私は伝統工芸の世界に入るだけの資質がなかったが、できる人には古いものの美しさを継承してほしいとは思う。
