Is it a bird? An angel perhaps?

Ist es ein Vogel oder schon ein Engel? Is it a bird or already an angel?

Vogel in German means 'Bird', I though it is more than accurate regardless Friedmann Vogel.

My today's drawing model is none other than the excellent German ballet master Friedmann Vogel(b.1979).
His life story is completely different from the colourful figure of Sergey Polunin I was writing last week.

Vogel practised his skills from an early age in his home town - Stuttgart, where he received a prestige scholarship and continued his studies at the Princess Grace Academy of Classical Dance in Monte Carlo.

Vogel is the recipient of countless awards and has even performed on the stages like famous La Scala Theatre Ballet in Milan and the unmatched Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. His achievements do not end here - last year he was honoured with the position of juror of the Prix de Lausanne. What is most interesting in this fact, that a quarter of a century earlier - he won in the very same competition!

I would also like to point out that the fact, that Vogel does not getting himself into controversial projects, does not diminish him, on the contrary - despite the fact that his path seems simpler(straighter for sure!) than S. Polunin, he is still extremely fascinating figure. Vogel is known for his professionalism, his complete dedication to dance and his extremely charismatic performances.

He is a source of inspiration not only for dancers of the young generation, but also for artists and photographers. I would even risk the statement, that he is personal muse for many. The amount of pictures of his likeness taken by famous photographers is just astonishing!

At the very end of the article, you will find several links to his bio, video clips etc. etc.

Usually, when I draw, I sit in the corner, preferably on the floor, leaning against the radiator (my favourite spot in the world!) with my sketchbook on my lap and I would just start drawing.

With the series about dancers it is completely different. I sit down at my desk and stare at the blank paper in silence for a long moment. I take an indefinite amount of time sharpening already sharp pencils, arranging them by degrees of hardness. I prepare different types of erasers, remove the invisible dust from the paper. And I think.

I imagine, what it feels like, for an artist, preparing for a big performance. I feel the coldness of the practice room, which is completely empty, the silence of which is broken by the echo of the quick steps of bare feet. Then, after a while the place is filled with the heavy, sour smell of the spinning bodies.

I see mirrors, but I do not look at myself in the eye, but follow my steps, I focus my attention on tense muscles, breathing. I am straightening my back, stretching the neck up as far as I can - and I look at the white ceiling.

Empty as a sheet of paper in front of me.

About the drawing:

Like the portrait of Sergei Polunin - here too, I started with a very soft pencil, in this case 4B.
I wanted the figure of the model to be heavily shaded, so that the figure can 'lift' the sizzle of the white paper. I wanted nothing to distract the viewer from the 'wings' and the figure. White paper can be at times a bit overwhelming, but in this case it seems to me a good base, because such an unusual, emotional pose requires space, air. The dancer deserves the leading role.

I hope that this week will treats you gently, and you will reach end of it with a smile:)

I like your illustration! You did a good job presenting it in PYPT today in Dreemport Discord! Thanks for joining us! 😊

It has been lovely to talk to you guys! I am so sorry to take so much of your time!
I am glad you like my work, thank you for popping by!

the first picture.. always... i think - so good. everything is already here - its already SO GOOD!

and then, I flick through one by one - watching the image get more and more detailed. each time thinking - can't be better. there is NOTHING else she could add to this to be better - its already perfection!!

and the next gets better!!!! how>?!?!?!

I'm in such awe of your talent!! and your writing is a perfect match - which is VERY difficult to come by here on Hive! hehehe usually it's one or the other - but so rarely both.

You're WONDERFUL!

so now... hehehe do you sell these??? I would love to have this one! hehehe Could you part with it??

🤗 Don't know what to say... Thank you very much!

Usually I just store my drawings in some random places. I enjoy the process. I never thought that, they are any good, to be honest. In art academy I was I don't know - mediocre at the most. Plus I don't have a character to do exhibitions, drink wine and talk shit about art. Just don't feel it at all:)

Good deal of my paintings and drawings I left behind, when I moved from my home country. I probably should check them out, just to see if I did any progress.

The one above and portrait of Sergej Polunin I've just posted to my Mum yesterday Morning. I've sent her pics and she really liked it, which is quite rare. When I was very young I loved to draw quite gore stuff, anthropomorphic characters and so on, and she hate it 🤣🤣🤣 so I was thrilled when she said '- can I have those?'
Now I don't think I have a favourite subject. I decided that.. I don't have decide. I don't have to 'have a style'. I am just doing what I want in the very moment.

I was selling some portraits ages ago, but I am not good with deadlines and stuff, so stopped doing that. But if you find any of my drawings interesting enough to want to actually own them, please let me know @dreemsteem!
For me it would be a huge pleasure, if someone has chosen to have my drawing on the wall :) If you like my ballet dancers series the most, no worries - there will be more!

gahhhhhhhhhhhh Mom got it already! hahahahaha

yep - that's the one I would have purchased hahahahaha

there was something very... "recklessly abandoned to the art" that i loved about it hahahahaha

it spoke to me!!!
I'm glad that it went to Mom though - there is no better place! hahahah

Sorry 🙈
Next time you have to be quick!

hdehehe i will be the QUICKEST!!!!

I take an indefinite amount of time sharpening already sharp pencils

This line got me thinking out loud. Have you ever drawn on a live show or something of that sort? If yes, How did you get the instant motivation/muse?.

I loved this piece very much too. I wonder if there's any piece of yours that I don't like so much😅. You did a very detailed and unique job as usual.

I actually enjoy quick sketches 'from nature', but I am not particularly good at it. I am really bad with pressure of time to be honest.

Plus, since pandemic I haven't really been anywhere. In my old job though, I had to take a long rides by train to work and back, and I would sketch people there. Apart from reading the books that was my favourite thing during those trips. People, especially in the morning, are deep in their thoughts, they looking through the windows with longing eyes, they sleep with their head back and mouths opened. I really loved that! Not sure if this is the mater of motivation or finding the muse. It is pure curiosity I guess. I like watching people, trying to find out what they have in their head, how their day is going. Creepy a bit, I know 😀

But to draw body moving, not sure I could manage:) and I don't think I would just not 'be in the moment' and just watch actors, dancers. I love theatre, opera and so on, and I think this is the only time I can just sit and watch for hours. TV shows - I cannot stand episodes longer than 15 minutes :D

Always grateful to see you around!

I am really bad with pressure of time to be honest.

I'm sorry about that. It skipped my mind that pressure and some artist don't work well. I personally like artworks that time has been put into. One could see the intrinsic and extrinsic features properly and get the appreciate the artwork better.

I like watching people, trying to find out what they have in their head,

You're very inquisitive I must say, and that's an amazing trait. A superpower like that of professor X (reading minds) would suite you best 😃

Love whole X-men genre btw :) but to read actual people thoughts? Sounds horrible and intrusive to be fair. But dog's minds? That would be cool!
I really liked you 'shapeshifter' piece :) I would love to morph and change at will!

But dog's minds? That would be cool

Yes yes. I agree with you.

I really liked you 'shapeshifter' piece :) I would love to morph and change at will!

Being able to change at will Sounds cool right😅. If only😅

This is outstanding! I love the way you write - so eloquent, so poetic, authentic, and layered with meaning. And this drawing is incredible. You capture movement so beautifully. The layers are all woven together, in perfect shadow and light, and complemented by your written accompaniment... your creative process is purposeful and intentional. I love it.

And I was reading one of your posts earlier...now I have to find it again! where you spoke about the disappearing ink and the bleed through. I hadn't left my message there yet but I managed to close the post. I loved that side-by-side set of images that you displayed at the end of your post. Front and back.

...and don't get me started on the hilarious debate about dill in the comments !LOLZ

Hope you are having a wonderful day, Strega 💗 !LUV

I really appreciate your comments @samsmith1971 They are always so thorough and insightful.
As always - thank you for all the praises as well!
