It sounded to me like the child was in a waking Fever-Dream and the father was rushing to get him to aid in the elements and dark of night. The Elf-King seemed to represent death and the lure to calling someone over to the other side... first through subtlety and if not a willing victim.. then by force.

So, either the child was hallucinating these things or...
It was all really all actual and only the child was able to experience and perceive the supernatural entities. Very cool either way. Really cool balad.
