Daily Painting – Kangaroos, Nutcracker Day & A nice sky
Hi guys, so today was a little bit exciting.
It’s NUTCRACKER DAY.
And by that I naturally mean the family went to see The Queensland Ballet perform The Nutcracker at the BIG theatre — not our little local one — but QPAC in Brisbane City.
Last year we made a big adventure of it and stayed overnight in town, but this year the accommodation was going to cost us about $1200 (extortion), plus a fancy dinner (last time was $500 for the four of us), plus the $500 tickets and… phew.
A bit much.
So this time we’re skipping the overnight stay and just heading in for the performance and a less fancy dinner.

This Morning
I spent the morning cleaning out the swimming pool and then doing a quick little painting.
Colours Used
Sky:
Ultramarine, cobalt, sienna and white.
The paint went on really thick and I’m super pleased with how the sky turned out. I’m actually getting better at painting a plain blue sky without making it look spotty.
Distant Treeline:
Yellow, blue, raw sienna, burnt umber, and a tad of phthalo green.
Hill Line:
Just cobalt blue.
(It took me a while to make the blue… you know when you keep mixing and it looks rubbish, and you’re like “why is this not working?” Yeah. I was trying to do it with ultramarine, not cobalt. Oops.)
Foreground:
A dead tree and grasses, keeping the shapes loose.
Kangaroos:
Just gesture shapes — literally focusing only on dark vs. light, not detail. I’m fairly happy considering they are TINY AS.

Final Thoughts
I’m fairly happy with it for the time period.
Happy with my progress.
Still learning. Still making mistakes. Still lots more to fix and lots more to learn.
Anyway I’d better dash — we need to get ready and get outta here to make it to the theatre.
See you next painting!

That's quite a price hike from last year O_O
Love the little painting! Did you have to use a brush that only has one hair XD I was joking about getting a brush with a single hair for youngest when he said he wanted a finer pointier brush. We were passing a Jackson's when running an errand and had a decent buffer so stopped in and bought him the tiniest pointiest brush we could find which he's quite happy with as apparently he can now do edge highlighting on these tiny stripes on hgis Warhammer models that I am taking wayt too long to be able to focus on, I feel so old aaaahhhhhhhh.
How was the show?
show was delightful... though i felt a litte less than last year. very funny. the kids well enjoyed the humour of it. Naughty children misbehaving on stage always gets a laugh.... actually brushes i TRY and use the biggest one i can for as long as i can..... i did need to go to "warhammer brushes" for the end though. My husband is a DND fan... so im alll pro on warhammer... lol the little brushes are so expensive are they not! what sort of warhammer models are done in your house?
We got the cheaper version for acrylic paints not the sable hair version for oil paints (I think that was what the difference was), it wasn't a huge jump in price from memory but we just got the cheaper one because he uses acrylics. The army that he's working on at the moment is Thousand Suns (I love the blue), there's this gigtantic model that he wants to get to complete that particular army (needs to get it to 2000 points and this model will do that apparently). He has a small batch of Dark Angels, he started out with that because they were his favourite colour but got more interested in the other one. There are also a couple of kill teams (I think the kill teams came in the same box) and I think some tyrannids and space marines or something which I think came in a starter set.
If I remember (coz this weekend is insane and I am currently not doing anything tangentially related to several things which I absolutely have to be working on right this second, I just kind of can't do them at once and my brain is really tired) I will try to take a photo of the display cabinet we got him recently because the Warhammer thing was becoming a bit of an issue XD
oh frick... i replied and it didn't post... ffs... and have just shut down computer. will recheck tomorrow.... ffs.... lol
right sorry about that.... i must have hit "Post" on the post and it asked for my PW that i didn't see. lol about space for the model things. My husband had hundreds of the little buggers in my bookshelves and you can't clean around them either. such a pain. we are now back to 100 model aircrafts and i made him put the figurines in a box. he does D&D with his work friends... lol. i hate it when he borrows my paints he often ruins my brushes by leaving them sitting in metalic paints. i have some nice metalic paints. yeah you should shoot through photos when you can. they certainly are cute to paint.
sorry this is the photo of the park in question with the kangaroos.... duh... i forgot to post it...
