Make a wish Astronaut - sand sculpture

in OnChainArt5 years ago (edited)

It's no great coincidence that in 1968 we had the amazing film 2001: A Space Odyssey and then a year later were the first steps for a man on the moon. It is so obvious that both productions where made by the director Stanley Kubrick. He was such a perfectionist, it all seemed so real. He even insisted that they shoot on location but ,I digress!

Growing up many children dream of being an astronaut. To explore space and float around in the dark void seems to have a great attraction. Not for me, I was happy to have my two feet planted on solid ground. It was only when I started diving under the sea that I could finally see the allure.

This quick one day sculpture was made for the charity The Make A Wish Foundation and the idea was to fulfill the dream of a child to beome a spaceman. Make a Wish is a great charity and grants wishes to very sick children. Of course going to space is not something that I could help them with so I decided to make a sand sculpture instead, I am a sand sculptor after all. Working With charities is something I am very happy to do when the request arises.

In the time I was given I knew it would have to be quite simple as they had a photocall set for early afternoon. My idea was to make the astronaut suit and stand it on the moon. At the back of the suit I made a little set of stairs that they could climb up and stick there head inside the Helmet, that's why the head as a hole in it. It took away from the sculpture a bit but I hope you get the idea. it was nice to create something in market Square here in Dublin city

I don't have any pictures of anyone actually using the photo opportunity, It turned out that as I forgot my camera and the images you see here are from my timelapse camera which I turned off when the sculpture was finished. Speaking of timelapse here it is.

Thank you So much, and thank you for all your encouragement and support.

This is a great piece of artwork, and greater use of your artistic skill! Sure we can't help them to actually go to space, but hey, we (artists) can at least bring a tiny bit of the experience here! I love this! 10 Neil out of 10 Armstrong 👍

Hi Rainite, Thank you so much. It would be great if we could send these kids to space. Maybe one day it will be possible, for now this is the best I can do for them.

I don't think the hole in the sculpture takes away from it, on the contrary I think it's ever so much cooler knowing the story behind it XP
