Wednesday Walk - Taste Testing Crab Apples

Didn't get much time to walk around for this #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay

But we did manage to walk around a few crab apple trees while trying to get fall leaf pictures of our daughter.

These tiny yellow crabappled looked great against the cold windy blue sky.

Here are some tiny red and yellow ones. So far the prior yellow ones tasted good but these guys were too bitter and left my mouth with a fuzzy sensation.

These plum sized apples were all off the tree.

I gave one a taste test and it tasted like a normal apple. Too small for sale in the stores I guess.

These bright red ones were really bitter and sour.

These darker red ones had bad tasting skin but the inside was quite sweet. I can imagine they would make a decent cider.

We failed at taking any good fall family pictures as it was cold and windy. In this picture a branch fell down off in the distance right as my wife took the picture. Looks like we'll have to do normal inside pictures to send out to relatives lol. The falling branch seemed to impress my daughter at least she smiled in this one. Probably need to hire a hyperactive photographer to psych the kid up into smiling.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Crabapples make wonderful jelly. !CTP

Does the skin need to be removed first? Or will the cooking process remove some of the bitterness?

Jelly requires enough sugar to remove the sour taste. You make juice using the cored and seeded fruit, I think. Also some people spice or pickle them whole.

Pickling is good at removing bitterness, there's a few bitter bolete mushrooms that taste good after pickling.

Looking good Dad 😉 we made some crabapple crisp desert last year. With enough sugar anything is tasty but the bigger issue was all the work coring the tiny apples 🙄 Smaller apples were often cider apples so maybe those are a rare heirloom cider apple haha Who knew?

Ha what a tedious task of coring tiny apples. The robins were loving the smaller apples on the ground, not sure if they were looking for worms inside or just eating the apple. I would definitely just make a cider out of those tiny apples. Crabapple cider would be ultra tart.

Wow the colours against the blue sky are amazing - just love these pics !

A nice day out with the family is very important for your child and makes memories for later. The fruit, all yellow and small, I had never seen one, I didn't know this species. Apples I know😜

They're basically tiny little apples, most of them are sour.

I admit I have never seen one like this. After the leaves of the fallen tree give a nice effect on the tree.

yeah it is strange looking with just fruit and no leaves. Almost looks more like a berry bush than a tree.

Thanks again @ackhoo :-)

love the warm colors of the crab apples

good luck with getting the family shots you need
