Wednesday Walk - Giant City

Here is a walk at Giant City State Park in Southern Illinois for this #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay

This park is at the very bottom of the state of Illinois.

This is a large state park with lots of trails through various huge stones.

1000002455.jpg
The way these sandstone deposits broke up after the ice age makes it look like these are solid concrete walls.

Grandma and granddaughter really loved the huge stones.

Over a hundred years of grafitti is scratched into this rock wall. Some from the 1800s and others from settlers before then.

1000002458.jpg
Someone tried to carve a strange face in the stone. Instead of a fancy face it turned into something creepy looking.

1000002456.jpg
I have no idea how tall these rock walls are. They dwarf the trees.

1000002463.jpg
Lots of easy climbing here with all sorts of hidden pathways. Have to watch out for timber rattlers hiding out here.

1000002462.jpg
I suspect this is some strange erosion that happened when the ice age glaciers melted.

We only saw a few of the trails but there are many more places to see. There is even a place called The Mini Grand Canyon. Eventually we'll be back down here again to explore more.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Wow! The size of those rock formations is impressive.

There are some strange ancient stone walls around there somewhere too but we couldn't find them, kind of off in a remote part of the park.

Are you familiar with Astrid Lindgren? Reminds me of the hellish gap in the story of Ronja the Robber's Daughter, which was filmed in just such cliffs! Super cool!

I haven't heard of that author but now I know of something to put on or get at the library. The movie has high ratings. The cliffs were a fun unexpected find. We were really in that area to find snakes and we found lots of them lol.

Wow! This is amazing! Rock park.

This place had quite a few hermit thrushes. I was hoping to see swallows in the rocks but they must have liked a different place to live.
