Wednesday Walk - Frozen Lake

It finally decided to get cold around here for #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay

Last week there was lots of fog but the lake wasn't frozen over. This week it is totally frozen.

I suspect it might be solid enough to go skating. But I wouldn't want to test it just yet...

Someone was walking out on the edges to test the thickness of the ice. I didn't see a big break in the ice so the ice is probably safe.

The school next to the lake is nice an ominous against the morning light. Sometimes they flood the football field with water to get a smoother ice skating rink than the rough ice on the lake. p1180205_copy.jpg
Here is a closeup of the rough ice. I can barely even skate on smooth ice.

I decided to walk a bit further on a running path nearby. The light made an nice bright spot off in the distance. Trying to walk fast on this path is impossible because the ice is so compacted and smooth from all the runners packing it solid.

Here is a cold squirrel I saw. I think it was chewing on bark.

p1180178_copy.jpg
I also spotted a red bellied woodpecker. Imagine trying to peck a tree in the cold, what a headache.

There was also a downy woodpecker going to town on a tree. Maybe there are some grubs deep inside the tree they are hunting for...

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-) Hopefully I can get some snow laden shots for next #wednesdaywalk

Sort:

it turns out that where you are now is winter, only you can enjoy winter. If in my country there is never such a thing as snow, I hope you are always healthy, my friend.

I bet the mushrooms grow year round for you though. During the winter there is mostly just snow and old polypore mushrooms.

Brrr that looks cold but so beautiful, I cant skate on any type of ice LOL

So cool you saw those woodpeckers

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

I can barely skate but the whole time it feels like I'm about to fall. It must take alot of talent to be a hockey player.

The times I tried I spent all my time falling and trying to get back up lol

There must be some sort of gyroscope in skater's brains that lets them keep their balance. I'm the same with roller skates and skateboards.

I think so some find it easy they must have an internal gyro lol

very beautiful animals, you have captured great pictures.

Very few animals were out in the cold I was lucky to see any.

Great shots .

Imagine trying to peck a tree in the cold, what a headache

I guess he/she doesn't feel any headache or just playing around lol, cool to see animals doing funny stuffs.

In the cold for us humans it hurts to even clap your hands together. Imagine having to smash a tree with your face lol.

Lol

I guess it's in their DNA. They just do what they want when they want.

Such a beautiful lake, and you spotted quite some animals.
😊

I'm lucky it is so close to me. I walk there almost every day to see the squirrels.

Extra great, to have this lake so close by. It just looks so lovely to walk there. Enjoy your walks 😊

The only thing missing are some large mountains in the background.

If we combine our posts… it would be perfect 😉 lol
Your lake and my mountains.
I do miss the seasons and snow with Christmas…

Looks suoer cold, but so beautiful.
Great shots @sketch.and.jam

It was around 4 degrees F, pretty cold but it will probably get even more cold soon.

We had a small pond we skated on as kids. The big problem was the cracks that would appear. Hit one of those and your knees took a beating.

Yeah and the ice is pretty solid plus the cold makes the landing extra bad lol.

This time of year I get such pond skating envy. We only have indoor omicron rinks in Portland...

But the ice is probably so smooth in there. I caught omicron a couple weeks ago, it was very mild lasted only three days with fever for 1 day and sore throat the rest of the days. Half my office caught it too with the same mildness. Hopefully it will be gone by spring with more light and vitamin d.

It is very smooth...
I'm round three vaxxed and a vitamin d junkie, so I'm not afraid of getting omicron, but at the clinic I treat a lot of low-income people from the outskirts of town, some of whom have health issues that would put them at risk.

Yeah my coworkers are round 3 boosted and caught it anyway. Buuut they also don't have the healthiest lifestyles so keep up with the vit d, c and zinc.

Lovely landscape. ❤️ what a magical place.
Nice job dear @sketch.and.jam

The cold makes it nice and peaceful. Everyone else stays inside where it is warm.

gölün buz tutttuğunu gördüğüm zaman benim de aklıma paten yapmak geldi. tabi önce öğrenmem gerekiyor 😂 Kış mevsiminin farklı, huzurlu bir yanı var. Soğuk içimizdeki bazı şeyleri harekete geçiriyor. 🖐️

When I saw that the lake was freezing, I also thought of skating. Of course, I need to learn first 😂 There is a different, peaceful side to the winter season. The cold stirs some things within us. 🖐️

I have only skated a couple times and it was very difficult. The next day I was sore all over from using different muscles than I was used to.

very nice and interesting bird i love the beautiful scenery

It was a bright color spot in the desolate landscape.

Such a wonderful thing it must be to skate. And out of doors in such a beautiful environment. My only skating experience was as a young teen at an indoor skating rink ~ Holding onto the rail the entire time. And a lot of delightful squealing with friends.

The running path looks so beautiful too. Can't imagine being able to run or walk fast on the ice though ~ Isn't it slippery? ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

I skate very similar to you hanging near the edge the whole time lol. The ice is very slippery on the running path. I've done backflips on it accidentally a few times where leaves are covering black ice then you slip and fall.
