Here is a view of Chicago in winter for this #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay
Here is a rare view of what I call God rays off the Chicago Riverwalk. These can be seen early in the morning as the sun rises then bounces off the mirrored building into the icy fog in the morning. This happens almost every year in February when fog rolls in off the lake.
The rays are best seen at the level of the river walk. Higher up on the bridges they kind of just blend into each other.
Frozen fog has a nice way of masking out the buildings in long perspective views. Sadly the water taxi is out of commission when the river is frozen so I get to take a long walk in the cold to work.
Some days it rains then immediately freezes creating a coating of ice over everything.
Icicles cover everything. They tend to be brittle and often start falling off the building onto people... Watch out for a spike to the head.
The walk to work can be very slippery during this time.
The icicles hang around until early March when the river finally thaws out and you can see interesting breaking textures form into the icicles.
The evening brings out the color as building lights start bouncing off the fog back into the city creating a glow.
Every now and then you can get a nice sunset when there is no fog.
Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing!
walking in this subzero weather builds lots of character lol
I lived on a frozen lake in Copenhagen once. On a boat. Lol... Layers are the secret to everything
I imagine some sort of houseboat beached on a pile of frozen ice out in the middle of a gray winter.
Beautiful pictures of the river walk, love the sunlight bouncing off the buildings creating great light patterns. Chicago is such a wonderful city to visit lots of beautiful architecture and. fun places to see and things to do.
Its kind of ominous right now with hardly anyone in the city because of covid.
I bet it is, Chicago has never been a quite city even in the cold.
The poor city rats are probably starving since all the restaurants are closed. They are probably turning on eachother by now.
It's too bad the big rats in the city haven't turned on themselves yet. Then the restaurants could be reopened and life could happen again. 😉
Bittersweet pictures. Beautiful in one way and dramatic in another. Windy city deserves its name hearing about the windchill lately on CNN. Take care!
Oh yeah that wind is pretty strong some days and drops the temperature even more.
Such a beautiful sunrise between the buildings. I rarely see that ... A nice walk through frozen Chicago... @sketch.and.jam 🥰
The sun is actually way off to the side out of the frame of the picture its just reflecting off the shiny building. It's bright enough to look like the sun though.
You really caught the right moment. It looks like the sun is rising between two buildings ... Not like a reflection ...🤗
i hear it's windy there in chicago. i don't mind the cold if the wind is still but cold and wind together is not for me
Yeah I had to buy big goggles to fit over my glasses for that cold wind chill. When it gets around my normal glasses it causes endless tears. By the time I get to work it looks like I've been crying all night lol.
