Wednesday Walk - The Drama

in Wednesday Walk4 years ago (edited)

Hive community always brings something interesting - today I discovered Wednesday Walk community thanks to @dodovietnam. You should check out his post with stunning photos of the Vietnamese rainforest.

I can’t write about the trips to the forest but I explored my rainy city once again.

The National Theatre

I love living close to the old town. It takes me only about five minutes on foot to reach the cobbled streets and there’s always a new pathway to discover. Today I passed by the National Theatre that you can see below.

It’s now 110 years old and it’s built in neobaroque style. Initially, it was called The Jubilee Theatre of Franz Josef I. and featured mainly the plays in German language.

Today, the building is known as Drama. The first play in Slovenian was only played there in 1919, but it has since become the main institution for theatrical performances.

Why does matter?

I’m glad that visiting theatre was a regular activity for us as kids in both primary and secondary school. All the students had an annual ticket and we visited the shows together with a few teachers and usually spoke about it in our next lecture. Most of these plays touch on the contemporary social issues, sometimes they’re a critique, often they offer another perspective or make the viewer wonder about his opinion or stance on the topic.

Plus, I think it helps fostering the sense of culture and encourages kids and teens to incorporate it in their life later on. Sure, Netflix is cheaper and serves you exactly what you want to watch but watching a live play with actors right in front of you is much more immersive. I’m quite sure many wouldn’t attend shows if it wasn’t for this kind of encouragement early on.

Rainy paradise

Continuing the walk towards the river that floats through the centre I reached the Tripple Bridge - probably the most famous bridge that now serves pedestrians and bikers only because the area is closed for traffic. This below is one of the three sections that run in parallel side by side. The buildings to the left and right are sone of my favourite sights.

You can also see the castle on top of the hill in the background. It’s a nice spot for an uphill Sunday walk in the sun and opens the views across the whole city. You can also get there with a funicular if you don’t feel like climbing the stairs.

The old part is full of small souvenir shops, chocolateries, small restaurants, bars, jewelry stores and bookshops. Most of them are small local businesses that each add to the vibrant atmosphere of the downtown.

On the way back I walked more or less alone. Seems like the whole town becomes a bit more quiet during the fall and winter. The nice thing is that the place is really safe so you don’t need to worry about much else than the drizzle. And in that case, an umbrella will do ☂️

Take care, everyone, and enjoy the autumn season, wherever you are :)
