Cobblestoned streets of Baja

This post needs a nice introduction, and not a kind of rant... but what can I tell you...? As I start to write this post, my left leg is swollen. Around my ankle. Although I walked in a town in Hungary in the morning today, and in the afternoon on one little island in the middle of the Danube (no more spoilers at the moment), my leg is not swollen due to a lot of walking. I wish it was just that but on that afternoon excursion on the river, I was bitten by an insect.

It was a Tabaninae (I hope it is the English translation, could be also called horsefly) that decided my leg would be the best source for an afternoon blood intake. I got a reaction to that bite; my leg is red, swollen and very itchy. Ok, the rant part finishes here hahaha, now the real thing - the walk in this city, Baja.

If you were around my blog last year in the summer, then you can already recognize this magnificent building. The town hall of Baja, in southern Hungary. The yellow facade is full of eyes, as I like to call the windows sometimes. ;)

But also, many eyes can watch the square and the streets around from these windows; who knows what they have seen since 1744 when this building was constructed. I have always liked the four little towers that crown the building which btw looks like a castle. It is not by chance - it indeed was a palace, The Grassalkovich palace. It was built in the Baroque style and later got classicist and Neo-Renaissance influence.

What you can see around The Grassalkovich palace is that all the pavements and streets are cobblestoned. It gives a so special touch to the city centre, as if time stopped here. Just these cars spoil the ambience. 😂

Cars everywhere... as this square, which also leads to another building I like in Baja, Danube Wellness Hotel, is used as a parking lot. It is not the nicest version of a square but at least people can park here in the city centre for free.

The only protected area from vehicles is this monument, in the middle of the square. It is the Holy Trinity statue, which also gives the name of the square - The Holy Trinity Square.

More cobblestones? Yes, here they come; if you find yourself here one day, you can walk on them in all the surrounding streets!

Using cobbled stones for building roads had many benefits; even when the asphalt arrived some cities decided to leave the old cobblestoned streets. They drain the rainwater immediately, and I suppose it also preserves the historical appearance of a city.

Around the Franciscan Friary just the pavement is made in a similar way, but the road is already asphalted. Although, it would be cool to see the streets in that old way like around the town hall.

My last stop in today's Wednesday Walk post is this park full of horse chestnut trees. Horse chestnuts are not suitable for human consumption (that's a pity, as I like chestnuts 😁). When we were children, we used to collect this type of horse chestnuts in autumn and make crafts from them. Cool that I spotted these trees, even though we hadn't stopped here for a long time. I was still in good condition to walk, before the afternoon insect incident. 😅

Horse chestnuts, did you never play conkers?
speaking of horses , yes the horsefly bite is a right bastard...very painful and itchy, loads of antihistamine cream required.

Thee cars everywhere it must be a popular place to visit,

The number of cars increased everywhere, so even the locals when have to come to the city centre for some errands use a car and park there, in that square.

Horsefly - I was used to them long time ago, never happened any reaction. I think it's several years that I had no incidents with them so probably my body forgot about them and now reacted in this way. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It will pass, hopefully hahaha

Get well soon as they say. Don't see many of them where I am thankfully

It's incredible that the whole city is like this, the buildings are wonderful, but the streets are beautifully styled like this, with cobblestones. The final part of the walk in the middle of the grove is relaxing.

And yes, I have been stung by horseflies, bees and wasps and I know that it hurts a lot! And for at least 3 days it will be red, swollen and sore. The wasp is worse, it stung me 7 times on my back, it got under my shirt when I was doing sport and I couldn't get it out, it hurt me terribly for a week!
Put ice on it, lots of ice!

It's the city centre, but many many streets. A bit further it's already asphalt, I guess those that are not in the center were just dirt roads back in time.

Oh, no, it already sounds painful, those 7 wasp stings. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

It's a lovely city!

Yes 7... it had 7 points and they were clear. How are you feeling today?💗

I think I was more sad than happy while reading this post. How is it possible for a strangely named insect to hurt my great friend, I would like to squash it with my own shoes.

I'm sorry for this little stumble in your vacation and I sincerely hope you get better fast. Good that you were able to walk these streets and that it was a profitable day after all.... The other thing that has me a bit sad is.... What happened to the clouds in Baja? There are no clouds in Hungary? hahaha. It seemed so strange to me, but for a sky fan like me it's something I immediately notice. I hug you my dear pianist friend, I leave you a picture of your worst enemy today.

Jesus!

I don't want to see that insect never again hahaha 😂 It is fast and brutal, don't get close to it even if you want to save me 😜

Clouds were hiding. Late in the evening there was a storm here, so it seems the clouds arrived:D now again heat and cloudless sky 🤷🏻‍♀️

How's you legs now by the way? Hope it's better now.

The buildings everywhere here looks so amazing, the cobblestone really added a touch of uniqueness to the road. It's more fun to have a walk in there coz even the pathway leading you somewhere is all amazing and pretty. Each building is well maintained too, I'm not seeing any dark spot or mold on them.

Hmmm, leg - not much better. At least it's not itchy anymore but still a bit red and swollen.

There are so nice cities with cobblestones here around, this one I visit every year and indeed the buildings are all neat. I should also look around in other places, if I had more time in my vacations 😁

Great city planning—they preserved the cobblestone to maintain the city's beauty and historical appearance. Plus, it’s cost-effective since they didn’t have to replace it with asphalt.

How’s the horsefly bite? As someone who often gets insect bites, I totally get your frustration, haha.

Oh, insects love to bite and sting you too? Then you know haha and understand me 😁

In all cases, it is beneficial to preserve them. The only thing is that you can't drive on these streets fast hahaha, which is again good as it's the strict city centre and there are people who walk

Put some ice on the area of the bite and elevate your leg. I hope you get better soon and keep showing us beautiful places. I love the cobblestone streets 🤗

Thank you @mdrguez , everything is an adventure, even this insect incident 😁 Luckily it's not my hand that got affected, so I hope to continue writing posts from my vacations 😊

It's a great walk you had. Though insect bites you, you have awesome shots of the place you visited. I hope you will be fine soon. Great shots!

Thank you @selflessgem , I am glad you liked the place and the shots

Hi, get well soon. you have to walk more. Nice post with nice photos.
I have a suggestion, 1/2 tsp baking soda mix with 1/2 tsp toothpaste apply on the affected place. or any available balm. ( Vicks, tiger balm) :)

Thanks, @hindavi for your comment and the suggestion, I have to check do I have baking soda at home. 😊

Darn the misfortune! @mipiano
That pesky tabaninae insect bite was a real "buzz kill" to your wonderful day -- literally. I confess I had to look up what it was. Google returned with horsefly (or deerfly) and suggested applying baking soda paste, calamine lotion, or hydrocortisone cream. Feel better soon! !HUG

I guess the horseflies were waiting for horses to come to the park to eat the horse chestnuts, got impatient and went after you!🐝

Gorgeous architectural and cityscape photographs of Baja, Hungary!

The bite was already painful (he thought I was a horse hahaha) and the reaction was getting worse how time was passing. A real buzz kill haha, you are right, but with the funny explanation of why the incident happened the laugher is back

Thank you @ninahaskin , I am glad you liked this little old city ☺️

😢

... but 😁 the horsefly could have bitten you on the big toe if you were wearing sandals.

You sound like an expert on architecture. I like all this explanation and the walk.

Sana sana ...

I was barefoot anyway XD

I recorded a few videos and made some photos, was super happy and then oooooooouch

To collect the empty packagings of chocolate and biscuits? 😂

Yes, of course, for the post of things that add sweetness to life. As long as you've eaten them, I'm happy.

Ay pero me dejarás comer uno al menos, ¿no? ¡Es un viaje muy largo!

😅😂

oufff... horsefly bites are the worst!

Bitten many times by these creatures but never got a reaction like today 😑 Trying to cool it down with a compress of cold water with vinegar now

I am sure it'll be much better in the morning.

fingers crossed it doesn't get too itchy afterwards. 🤞

Thank you, sure it will be better or even all good in the morning 🌄 😊

You have to rest a little and put cold cloths on the area and above all do not touch it even if you have itching. Beautiful city.Take care of yourself so you can continue to enjoy your vacation.🥰😇

Thank you Mamani, I put cold water with vinegar clothes, many times. No rest here 😂
