Today I would like to show you an important part of the centre of my city, Valencia, Venezuela, which is full of history and history, it is the Candelaria square.
Hoy quiero mostrarles una parte importante del centro de mi ciudad, Valencia, Venezuela, la cual está llena de mucha historia y matices, se trata de la plaza Candelaria
The Plaza Candelaria is located in the centre of the city of Valencia and was once, according to my grandfather's story, a centre of entertainment. It has this beautiful church in honour of the patron saint of the parish, the Virgen de la Candelaria.
La plaza Candelaria está ubicada en el centro de la ciudad de valencia y alguna vez, según lo que contaba mi abuelo, fue un centro neurálgico de diversión. Tiene esta hermosísima iglesia en honor a la patrona de la parroquia, es decir, la virgen de la Candelaria
The civil parish was established on November 20, 1848 and in the past it was much larger as the other parishes in the city expanded. This church dates back to around the time of the foundation of the parish and is very beautiful. In the photograph it is not easy to make it out clearly, but in one of the three windows of the façade, specifically in the centre, there is a beautiful stained glass window of the Virgin of Candelaria.
La Parroquia civil fue creada el 20 de noviembre de 1848 y antiguamente era muchísimo más grande ya que las demás parroquias de la ciudad fueron expandiéndose. Esta iglesia data más o menos de los años de la fundación de la parroquia, es muy hermosa. En la fotografía no es fácil distinguirla con claridad pero en una de las tres ventanas de la fachada, específicamente en la del centro hay un bellísimo vitral de la virgen de la candelaria
Right in front of the square and the church is that supermarket, but in the same place, many years ago, there was a cinema that was very popular and much visited by the residents. My grandfather told us that when he was 16 years old he lived in a town in the Yaracui state called ‘Hato Viejo’ and he walked from there to the city of Valencia because he had no money for transportation, he must have been tired, it is true, but he did not think twice when his uncle invited him to see a movie in the Candelaria cinema, so I try to imagine my grandfather at 16 years old going into the cinema that has now been transformed into a supermarket, it is very surprising to see how much a city can change from generation to generation.
Justo frente a la plaza y la iglesia está ese supermercado, pero en ese mismo lugar, hace muchos años estaba un cine que era muy popular y muy visitado por los residentes. Mi abuelo nos contaba que cuando él tenía 16 años vivía en un pueblo del estado Yaracuy llamado "Hato Viejo" y se fue caminando desde allí hasta la ciudad de Valencia por no tener dinero para el transporte, debía estar cansado, es cierto, pero no lo pensó dos veces cuando su tío lo invitó a ver una película en el cine de la Candelaria, así que trato de imaginar a mi abuelo con 16 años de edad entrando al cine que ahora se ha transformado en supermercado, sorprende mucho ver cuanto puede cambiar una ciudad de generación en generación.
The square was restored and reopened in 2022 when they put this plaque under the statue of the virgin. The festivities of the Virgen de la Candelaria are celebrated every 2nd of February, it is a tradition that came with the Canarian Spaniards.
La plaza fue restaurada y reinaugurada en el 2022 cuando pusieron esta placa bajo la estatua de la virgen, las fiestas de la virgen de la candelaria se celebran cada 2 de febrero, es una tradición que vino con los españoles canarios.
I also got this statue of Miguel Peña, a hero of this city. Some love him for his contributions but others reproach him for having advised General Páez (president of the republic at the time) to consider the separation of Venezuela from Gran Colombia, something that disappointed and saddened General Simón Bolívar (the liberator).
También conseguí esta estatua de Miguel Peña, un prócer de esta ciudad. Algunos lo aman por sus aportes pero otros le reprochan el haber aconsejado al general Páez (presidente de la republica de esa época) que considerara la separación de Venezuela de la Gran Colombia, algo que decepcionó y entristeció mucho al General Simón Bolívar (el libertador)
