A Walk through History and Art [es/en]

Hello my Wednesday Walk friends!

Last Monday I accompanied my son to the Spanish Embassy to complete the last documents he needed to update. While he was at his appointment, I decided to take advantage of the time and take a little tour of the area. This place very close to downtown Havana is charming, with beautiful streets that invite to be explored. So I take advantage with this little tour to join the #wednesdaywalk challenge that every week invites us the friend @tattoodjay.

El lunes pasado acompañé a mi hijo a la Embajada de España para completar los últimos documentos que necesitaba actualizar. Mientras él estaba en su cita, decidí aprovechar el tiempo y dar un pequeño paseo por la zona. Este lugar muy cercano al centro de La Habana es encantador, con hermosas calles que invitan a ser exploradas. Así que aprovecho con este pequeño recorrido para unirme al reto #wednesdaywalk que cada semana nos invita el amigo @tattoodjay.

I began my tour to show you what I found on my way, starting from Cuarteles Street. The humidity of the previous days was still noticeable, which were very rainy, but these cobblestone streets never lose their charm, I really like walking on them. There is something special about walking on those cobblestones that seem to tell stories of times gone by. During my walk, I came across some impressive works of art on the facade of the house of the Cuban artist “Magdalena”. These works were created by the talented artist Alina Alejandra Picart, currently living in Spain, daughter of the owner of the house. Using the dry rope technique, a very old technique that I particularly like, she managed to capture on the facade of the house a beauty that deserves to be admired by everyone.

Comencé mi recorrido para mostrarles lo que encontré en mi camino, partiendo desde la calle Cuarteles. Aun se percibia la humedad de los dias pasados que fueron muy lluviosos, pero estas calles adoquinada nunca pierden el encanto, me ha gusta mucho caminar por ella. Hay algo especial en caminar sobre esos adoquines que parecen contar historias de tiempos pasados. Durante mi paseo, me topé con unas impresionantes obras de arte en la fachada de la casa de la artista cubana “Magdalena”. Estas obras fueron creadas por la talentosa artista Alina Alejandra Picart, actualmente residente en España, hija de la dueña de la casa. Utilizando la técnica de la cuerda seca, una técnica muy antigua, que me gusta particularmente, logró plasmar en la fachada de la casa una belleza que merece ser admirada por todos.

I continued my walk to the end of Cuarteles street, where it leads to Cuba street and we found the Ceiba Park. It is a small park that acquires its name because it has several ceibas, it is a perfect place to rest and reflect. Ceiba trees are robust and full of history, they are deeply rooted in our traditions and culture. Sitting under their shade is like connecting with our roots, as well as enjoying a lot of fresh air and great shade.

Continué mi paseo hasta el final de la calle Cuarteles, donde desemboca en la calle Cuba y nos encontramos con el Parque de la Ceiba. Es un pequeño parquecito que adquiere ese nombre porque cuenta con varias ceibas, es un lugar perfecto para descansar y reflexionar. Las ceibas, son árboles robustos y llenos de historia, están profundamente arraigados en nuestras tradiciones y cultura. Sentarse bajo su sombra es como conectar con nuestras raíces, ademas de disfrutar de mucho fresco y una gran sombra.

After enjoying a few moments in the park, I crossed a small bridge that passes over the preserved ruins of an old building. Despite having walked a lot through the streets of Havana, I had never been to this place. The street forms a triangle where Cuba, Tacón and Cuarteles streets converge. This place is known for having housed the Maestranza de Artillería, an important military complex during the colonial era. The Maestranza de Artillería occupied a triangular block and was a key site for the defense of the city. I had always heard about the remains of this construction but had never seen it up close.

Después de disfrutar unos momentos en el parque, crucé un pequeño puente que pasa sobre las ruinas conservadas de un antiguo edificio. A pesar de haber caminado mucho por las calles de La Habana, nunca había estado en este lugar. La calle forma un triángulo donde convergen las calles Cuba, Tacón y Cuarteles. Este lugar es conocido por haber albergado la Maestranza de Artillería, un importante complejo militar durante la época colonial. La Maestranza de Artillería ocupaba una manzana triangular y era un sitio clave para la defensa de la ciudad. Siempre había oído hablar de los restos de esta construcción pero nunca la había visto de cerca.

This bridge and the remains that surround it are silent witnesses of the history that has shaped our country. I took several photos of the surroundings, wanting to capture the essence of this place that takes us back in time.

Este puente y los restos que lo rodean son testigos mudos de la historia que ha moldeado a nuestro país. Tomé varias fotos de los alrededores, queriendo capturar la esencia de este lugar que nos traslada en el tiempo.

I continued walking but now back to the Embassy to pick up my son, but I kept taking photos until we made our way back home. I really enjoyed having that moment where I walked alone with my thoughts, through places that despite having heard about them and having passed by them, I had never visited.

Seguí caminando pero ahora de regreso a la Embajada para recoger a mi hijo, pero segi tomando fotos hasta que hicimos el camino de regreso a casas. Disfruté mucho tener ese momento donde caminaba sola con mis pensamientos, por lugares que a pesar de haber oído hablar de ellos y haber pasado por ellos, nunca había visitado.
