Walking through the city of Deventer

in Wednesday Walk11 hours ago

Even though I have lived in the Netherlands for so many years, there are just a lot of towns and cities that I have never visited proper. I was in the city of Deventer a while back and it was years back since I had last been here.

The funny thing is that foreigners never understand about Dutchies is that we always fuss about the hassle of travelling through the country. The distances here are small, and we are all used to that. When we have a bigger drive, it always feels like we are making a world trip. And that while I guess in other countries these distances are your average on the daily.

We don't agree. This town feels like the other side of the world for us.

Located next to the river 'the IJsel' which is a side branch on the Rhine river which goes further up to the North of the country, this city has its background anchored in there. Also there is a lot of history from boat coming through providing the city with everything they needed back in the days....

What I saw...people there are proud of the town and that is cool.

Houses in the city centre

Walking around bit through the city centre, I really was charmed about how the vibes of the old town were still respected. Here you can also see that how the oldschool ways of getting into the house and basement are.

Sometimes you see this in Amsterdam as well, I guess in old cities where a lot of the lower floors are also used to live in. A hatch inside...how cool and sweet to see how it is still in old style and so well maintained.

That means that a lot of the centre houses are still in the old style and are not allowed to change their front sites because of that the original architecture has to remain into place.
However, that doesn't mean a lot about the how everything looks inside. I'm sure this is all renovated and nice, but the outsides have to remain in the original state.

The overhanging ledges from the roof are always used to pull up furniture. It has a wheel inside where you can hang a rope on to lever your stuff up. Old fashioned moving in place!

The outdoors

It was kind of a bummer that it was typical Dutch weather on this day. Gray and kind of foggy, which on the other hand has a lot of charm in it. I would love to see the sun come up or set over the bridge over here with the fields in the background.

Yeah, this snap was taken from a little boat that crosses the canal every 7.5 minutes to get in the city centre. A smart move, because parking on the countryside was easy and it costed something like 1 euro roundtrip to get to the other side in like 2 minutes. I'd call that a smart move.

I was only able to see a small part of the town due to everything I had to do over there, but this was a good teaser that maybe I should head back to the city of Deventer in the spring or summer season for a brief trip.

Funny that there is still so much to discover in this small little country. You just need to step outside for a bit.
