The Walk Home

That was a very special day, we were surrounded by the Christmas magic of the capital. We went to a Christmas carol concert, ate ice cream and let ourselves be carried away by the beauty of the decorations in the streets and shopping malls. It was a special day, a mother and son moment that I had wanted to have for years. Our trip was over, the next day we would have to return to our city very early, so we wanted to take advantage of the few hours and we didn't take a cab, we preferred to walk home...

We just set out to walk down the main avenue that leads us on our way to my apartment, without any hurry and enjoying what the city has to offer and a good talk to drain. When this trip started my mom was burdened with many feelings that were hurting her, something that goes beyond mourning, but with the change of air changed also her expression on her face, she felt and looked calmer. The capital is very high, the climate is cool, very different from our hot city in the interior, so that alone was already a gift for both of us.

Not all Venezuelan cities are so lively at night, usually businesses close early and people go home, but Caracas has a lot of life during the night. We were downtown, although my mom's favorite stop was Plaza la Candelaria, she always tries to stop by when she visits me and visit the church Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, where the remains of the Blessed Doctor José Gregorio Hernández rest. It was almost midnight, but children were playing everywhere and the Christmas bazaar was still open and people were still shopping.

After this day I spent a wonderful time with my mom. She needed me and I needed her. Just last night we went for another walk, and walking together is the best time to talk and distract ourselves, it is a practice that helped me a lot and that I have tried to pass on to her during the holiday season. At some point I will have to return to the capital, to my work, so I will miss these days. Of course, not everything has been perfect, but I have managed to adapt to the reality of returning to my mother's house. It's no longer so strange to be here for a long time...
