A Wednesday Walk Around the National Stone Centre

in Wednesday Walk3 years ago

For my #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay we decided to walk around the local National Stone Centre. It is based in six former limestone quarries in Derbyshire, UK.

As a bit of a nerd (well a big one really) we followed the signposts for the Geo Trail through the disused limestone quarries. The rocks are packed with fossils.

The Millennium Wall and other stone wall exhibits were interesting to see. The Wall was built by members of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain in 2000.

The other stone walls show the skills and different styles of the stone wallers. There's definitely a skill to it and quite fascinating to see how the stones are placed together. It must be quite satisfying building a wall. If I built one, I'd need glue, as I'd be rubbish at it.

The place isn't very big but there are plenty of footpaths that take you further afield if you want a longer walk.

For the kids there's some 'gem panning' for £3. There is also a Visitor Centre with a shop that sells minerals and a nice little cafe, which is always welcome after a walk.

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

I'd love to have a go at stone walling but it would just end in tears. 🤣

It would be the same with me I have no doubt

Wow! You had a great time walking you know. It's been a while I took a Wednesday walk, I think I should do something next week and just loosen up. I enjoyed reading through and it felt like I was actually there walking alongside because of how neatly you analysed your story. Thanks for sharing.
