Typical food you get when you're attending an Indian religious puja
in Nickerie, Suriname. It's a vegetarian meal containing:

Roti or rice
Dhaal. Dhaal is a kind of soup made of mung bean with indian spices such as, cumin, Panch phoron, tumeric and some Garam masala
curry potato with eggplant or yardlong bean
pumpkin. This is also made with indian spices
karhie. Karhie is also a soup but this one is made of yellow peas.
Chutney. Chutney is a spicy or savory condiment originating in India and it's made from fruits, vegetables, and/or herbs with vinegar, sugar, and spices.
All of this is cooked on a chulha at the house where the puja will be held. A chulha is nothing more that just a stove made of clay. The food is cooked on the Chulha beacuse it gives a fine flavour to the food. Some also believe that cooking on a Chulha will create a sattva predominant environment in the area.

The first thing you have to do is go find a nice spot on the dining table after washing your hands. After that the waiters will come and distribute the leaves. Then the food-team will come with a jug filled with water and a bowl. They will pour the water on the leaf so you can wash it. Right After that, people of the food-team will walk in a row along you. Each of them has a bowl with one of the food item. They will ask if you want (for example) pumpkin, if so, you say yes and if you don't want pumpkin you say no. And than you can start to enjoy your delicious meal!

This is not the only thing you get to eat! You will also get sweets, deserts and "persad" to eat!

Thanks for reading! I hope to see you around on the #IAmAliveChallenge .

Hey @andyjim,
It is SOOO YUMMY. You should try this once!
Have a wonderful day

Ah, I always wondered if those leaves in the center of the city were used for something.
Now I know. Wedding food like this is something I've definitely missed during the past lockdown year.

!WINE

Hey @rarej,
I don't know if they use the leaves from there. Years ago there was an issue because some said that the water was polluted and it was also sewage water. I don't know if it really is that way. What I know is that there are some ponds where those lotuses are specially cultured.

Didn't mean specifically from there, just a reference to the type of leaf. But it makes sense. Removing the leaves from the center would also damage the tourist aesthetic of the area.

Hey @corporateay,
haha it is fully vegetarian! Delicious!
You should try that once!
Have a great day :)

When I was working in Maldives, I was in touch with the Indian expatriates working in the same place. I participated, back then, with a few of Indian cultures (At first I didn't know that they were religious in nature). One of them were Onam festival. They prepared dishes all out of vegetables only, there were no fish or meat or eggs at all. I was invited as well and we were given the meal on the banana leaf. And yes, they prepared some sweet items as well.

Afterwards, I lost connection with them. The puja you described, was that Onam festival?

Have a wonderful day.

No, this was at a wedding puja. I don't think that people in my country know about the Onam festival or believe in it. By chance I know about it because I read it on the internet once. I think that it is that way because our ancestors didn't passed that tradition.
Have a blessed day

Hi @raishmi, Happy to see you alive. Today's content tells you how to use a traditional food. I have a special fondness for traditional Indian dishes. Because some Indian food is prepared in some parts of our country as well. Eating lotus leaf food brings fresh inspiration and also enhances the taste of the food. Lotus leaf food distribution is still done in our rural areas. People living in cities are now tempted to eat this kind of food. That is to change their lifestyle.

Hey @jlufer
Thank you. I'm proud of my country and everything we have and do. My pleasure to share all of this with you!
My country has a multi-cultural society. This makes my country so beautiful!❤️
Have a wonderful day

I know that weddings aren't the only occasion when eating this kind of food, but I do miss Indian weddings and the food served. Sighhh

I know we can make the food ourselves though, but it's not the same haha

Enjoy the weekend! :)

Hey @tanjakolader,
in most cases when there is a puja, they cook like this. Now days people do make other vegetarian food like fried rice or pasta. I do appreciate that but it is a different vibe when they serve the traditional food in the lotus leaf, DELICIOUS!
haha, I love it when the old people cook, it tastes differently.
Have a splendid weekend!

I know... Hahaha
Makes me think of the Javanese gundureng (rituals, with after that a meal served), where the men distribute every item after each other and after that the food's wrapped in banana leaves and the men will share the food with their families.

When I get to eat that food I can't help but eat with my hand 🙈
It tastes so different when eating with your hand.

I would love to see the gundureng. I do not have Javanese friends which carry on the tradition, so I have never seen it :(
The only Javanese traditional/cultural food I tried on my own was the BARKAT (I don't know how to write it). I would love to know more about the Javanese tradition/culture.
Haha, when I'm eating at home, it's always with my hand! EXCLUDING SOUP! HAHA
I do agree with that! Food is tastier when you're eating with hand

Oh..... Berkat is the food you get at a gundureng 🙈
I don't know if my spelling is good also haha

Anyway, so gundureng is the ritual and berkat is the food you get after or during the ritual 😉
These rituals are when people get married, a boy gets circumsized, when a baby's hair gets shaved for the first time, etc.
