World Hand Hygiene Day + Día Mundial de la Higiene de las Manos [Eng+Spa]

Spanish Version Bellow

It's Sunday night, I got a small text package to check in the mail. It took me longer than I anticipated, I've had a scattered mind lately. I had blamed it on the recent flu, but I'm now recovered, and I still feel like my mind is slower than usual. Anyway, I guess I'm just a little 'rusty' (personal smile).

Anyway, I managed to finish the work, I mailed it. It's the weekend, but since I work from home, when something comes up to do, I better do it. Going off topics from my personal #life, even though it is a record of the day, I would like to comment on a celebration on the calendar. It is a topic in the #health area, and it has a recent #History, but it has the particularity that it is a celebration that a colleague from the chain pointed out to me.

Today is World Hand Hygiene Day.

@dmhafiz told me about this celebration, in a response to my post the day before. And it was perfect for me to record today.

The date was proposed by the World Health Organization in 2009. In my region, the Pan American Health Organization supports this celebration. Hence, when I consulted the official websites, I found that the #WHO website was only in English, and the #PAHO website was in Spanish.

  • WHO: World Hand Hygiene Day.
  • PAHO: Día Mundial de la Higiene de las Manos 2024.

The campaign began as a way to highlight the importance of the simple action of maintaining hand hygiene to promote the control of epidemics, casual infections and contamination of food or environments.

I think this celebration gained marked relevance after the pandemic exploded a few years ago.

When all this started, in 2009, the WHO focused on hand hygiene of health personnel and medical-care centers. The focus was then expanded to all workspaces. And I think this should actually be considered in any workplace where handling contamination could pose a health risk.

This includes the field of cooking, serving people, transportation and many other areas of work.

Ultimately, spending a little time to keep your hands clean can go a long way toward controlling potential problems. And this is not only for the benefit of other people, since the first person at health risk due to poor hand hygiene is ourselves.

By the way, the WHO motto for this date seemed a little exaggerated to me at the beginning: 'SAVE LIVES: Wash your hands'. But, I remembered certain historical records I have read of absurd cases in which all the problems (and deaths) could have been avoided (or reduced in number) if good and timely hygiene had been observed.

Talking about this with my brother, he reminded me that handwashing was frowned upon in the medical traditions of previous centuries. Even repeatedly washing your hands before caring for patients was frowned upon, or contraindicated. It sounds absurd today, but it was the 'should be' of that time. I am very glad that things changed for the better.

Well, I think I'm already going a little over the usual length of my daily log. Besides, I want to review some videos from some friends. So I'm going to say goodbye for today, wishing you that you are well, that you wash your hands well, and that we can read again another time.

Even repeatedly washing your hands before caring for patients was frowned upon, or contraindicated.

That's a pretty interesting information for us! What could be their logic back then!!

#aliveandthriving

Actually, I would also like to know what logic was behind that idea.

My brother told me that there is a possible explanation in records from previous centuries, which indicate that when washing hands, strong alcohol was usually used at the end. The repeated use of the chemical caused damage to the skin, which could explain why it was considered contraindicated.

This history of strong hand hygiene products is also related to the development of the first industrially manufactured surgical gloves. The idea was to achieve greater protection for patients, without damaging the skin of their hands.

I was looking for more data on my own, and it seems that it was not until the 19th century, with Florence Nightingale, that the issue of hygiene was taken more seriously. Not only did she mark it as a must-have, but she compiled data that allowed her to argue with statistical analysis that better hygiene meant reduced risks, and a higher survival rate.

It make sense. However, it was from the doctor's-skin-safety point of view. Not from the perspective of safety of the patients.

Thanks for the additional information.

In Nightingale's case, it appears that she did focus on the issue of patient safety, health, and survival. At least that is what is reported in the records I have seen :)
