Hal Finney fue diagnosticado de ELA en verano de 2009. En aquel momento supo que en poco tiempo no podría hablar. Por ese motivo, a principios de 2010 grabó un vídeo para que todos pudiésemos escuchar su voz y conocer su historia. Durante unos 30 minutos, Hal hace un resumen de su infancia, su carrera profesional y su vida familiar.
