I think the bigger the gap between expectations and reality, the easier it is for new users to leave after some time. The concept of value for value will work well, provide value and one will be rewarded. For me, I mostly saw it as an adventure during my very early days :)

So it's better to keep expectations low while working on how to bring value. That's how one gets rewarded. Unfortunately not everyone seems to know this fact.
