Personally I think that most politicians have three agenda and they are typically self serving. (1) Enrich themselves so they are top of the heap. (2) Make the country better so they can live in a nicer place. (3) Keep the people moderately happy so they aren't threatening revolt while the politician lives a nice life.
But then again, I might be jaded :)
