A lesson I learned from giving out a loan to a friend

We all know it is not easy to pay back after borrowing money. Money is such that if it isn’t in your pocket there are no negative thoughts but immediately you get hold of it, you don’t wanna let go.

I remember at the beginning of the year a friend approached me and spoke to me about getting him a loan of a huge sum of money, I didn’t wanna give it to him but his reason was that his dad was seriously sick and that he needed that money to get him drugs from the pharmacy and promise to pay back at the end of the month.

I gave him the money without hesitating but I later on found out that he lied to get the money and that his dad was well and in good shape. That pissed me off but I kept my cool waiting for the month to end and I will approach him for my money.

It wasn’t long till February finally came to an end. I still remember the date and time I called him and to my surprise, he blocked my number, at first I thought it was a network problem so I kept calling but it was still the same issue. So I later on decided to use a different number to call him lo and behold it went through and he answered, I told him I was the one and that I have been trying to get hold of him for hours but it doesn’t go through. The answer he gave me was that his phone got spoilt and he just got it fixed. 😂

Well, I didn’t get my money back that day, all he did was give me stories and at that moment I knew if I don’t put aside the friendship and act wicked I won’t get my money back anytime soon. It got to a time that people around him hated me because of the stories he had polluted them with, apparently, he told them that I needed money from him and he said he doesn’t have and I kept insisting. 🤦‍♂️

The loan that was supposed to be paid at the start of the month had to be paid partially in the middle of the month, till date he doesn’t wanna talk to me anymore but I’m just glad I was able to get a part of it.

Since then, I promised never to give out loans even to my best friends. It brakes a lot of bonds and trust when not paid on time. If a person approaches me with his or her problem I will try my best to help out but if it has to do with borrowing, he or she would have to look for another place.

There are people out there that always try to keep to their word and there are others that don’t, they are rather those that make it hard for people willing to help others out because you can never know who you are loaning it to.

This is the challenge I went through with a friend who took a loan from me.
