In recent times, the inventions of generative artificial intelligence (A.I) has been the order of the day, where students especially tend to use these AI's for their assignments, homeworks and project works. I sincerely believe that, students and other individuals from educational institutions have seen the positive effects of these generative AI's.
ChatGPT was created by a company called OpenAI, is one of the generative AIs. Even though it has reduced workload for students, but in February, 2024, an associate professor at the FAST School of Management at the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences in Pakistan, Dr Muhammad Abbas, published an article in the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education examining the causes and consequences of the usage of generative AI among university students.
In the article, the factor that he greatly considered was the work load on students and time pressure, and these factors pushes students to use ChatGPT and other generative, but he went on to elaborate that, excessive reliance of these AIs are associated with high levels procrastination and memory loss and negative impact on academic performance. This is when students use these AI's for almost everything, without them brainstorming to to find answers.
In some contexts, he might be right because it was his research. Even after reading his article, I had conversations with my colleagues and the point that came out was that, most students do not know how to use these generative AI's like ChatGPT since they want all the answers without consorting other references or information from other sources to confirm what they have already collected from ChatGPT
