Smartphones in Schools: Empowering Learning or Hindering Growth?

in Hive Learners3 days ago (edited)

Looking back, one thing I know about myself during my teenage years was that I was always going to do the exact thing I was asked not to do. It wasn’t that I was a stubborn kid, but you know , I was a teenager and it made sense for me to rebel then.

But, looking at it now. I’ve come to understand that some of the things I did were really not necessary. Like staying up all night on my phone when I was supposed to sleep and feel refreshed for the next school day. In todays world, we call ourselves the technology generation because why not? We are always neck deep into our phones ,laptops and other gadgets. Today, you walk on the streets and both pedestrians and drivers are on their phones. We tend to even pay less attention to the road safely rules , or whether we get knocked down or not.

When it comes to education and the schooling system, gone were the days when our parents used to study with encyclopaedias, but they still made the grades. Today, things are different. Most of us have thrown away the books and have resorted to e-learning materials. In the university now, no one buys handouts anymore. Everyone uses lecture slides and what have you to study. But on the lower levels such as pre school, junior high and senior high, most students are taught the traditional way aside from high class schools running on different curriculums.

Back in senior high school, phones were not allowed but as teenagers we always found our way around things. Most of my mates in the boarding house had phones they were secretly using. Not to study, but to chat with their friends and do other stuff. Thinking about it now, I believe it would have been a lot better if the school allowed phones for a stipulated period in the day and take them back until the next day. That way, students wouldn’t need to hide phones and end up using them all night instead of studying or sleeping.

If phones are allowed in schools for a specific period of time on the daily basis, it would be more of a win win situation for everyone because students of today can’t do away with their phones and it’s best to accept that fact. So, instead of schools trying to prevent students from using their phones which they would most definitely end up doing, why don’t we meet these students half way so that there would be a perfect balance and focus on things that matter at the right time.

With this, students would be able to make their research online during their phone time while also talking to friends and loved ones. At the end of the day, our students pass and still have their phones when necessary. With this ,I believe our schooling system at the lower levels would be a lot better. But as for the higher levels, we know electronic gadgets are something we obviously can’t do away with.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, thank you for your time.

Regulating the usage of phones for the period when needed isn't a bad idea, I guess this will help students maximise the time they have with their phones and use them for something productive.

That’s more like the way to go now.

The addiction baffles me so much especially when I see drivers on their phone even when the vehicle is in motion, not answering calls but chatting. It's getting out of hand.

That’s the world we are in now. We just need to protect ourselves.

I believe the use of AI for personal study is a good thing, but outside of that, phones shouldn't be allowed in class. You can use your laptop for other things, especially taking notes, but your phone. Nope. It will only cause more trouble than the good it was intended for. Humans will always take advantage of something good and turn it the other way around.

Hmm. You have a point though, but what phones can do, laptops can do basically the same thing when you think about it.

It's really the new Gen and things have really changed. But the idea of kids using their phones during exams is crazy, I just think using it for research and all is okay but during exams is a big NO for me

That makes sense. But even now, most people cheat with phones in the exam hall. It makes me ask myself if this really is good for us or not.

The regulation of using phones at specific times of the day is fine, however, adding strict measures which could monitor what they use the phones for could make it much better.

That’s true. But will these kids listen.😂

Regulating the use of phones is not a bad idea, but I just hope the opportunity won't be abused, because the way this generation are so addicted to phones is alarming.

That’s true. But let’s hope for the best.
