Rural or Urban? [EN/PT]

Choosing a place to live brings with it a certain responsibility. Normally, we have two options when it comes to settling in a place: rural or urban. Of course, we may be able to find a town or city that is a middle ground, would a small town that is minimally urbanized be closer to that balance? Perhaps, but whatever the choice, we know that there are positives and negatives to this type of environment.

I can speak with authority on this kind of subject, as I lived in a rural area for many years and have lived in an urban area for many years now, and yes, they are very different scenarios. Perhaps the negatives of the big city are proportional to the positives. In more urbanized places, we have much better infrastructure, more job opportunities and more variety of paths we can follow professionally, as well as more opportunities to study and become professionals.

Living in a large, urbanized city is good and, in many ways, it's more convenient and comfortable, we have everything around us, and even for those who don't like to leave the house, everything comes to you! However, there are also major downsides, such as the daily hellish traffic. We are more exposed to crime, and stress is also part of our daily lives. People don't care about each other, and there are many opportunists and people who are insensitive to others. Of course, the cost of living is also higher, everything you do is paid for, and there's no shortage of things to entice you to spend more money!

Rural life is different and, to a certain extent, opposite to urban life. People care more about each other and are empathetic. There aren't many industrialized options for food or the facilities for delivery or fast food, what you want to eat needs to be prepared. But it's also a style of eating that can be healthier, because you're closer to vegetables, fruit and vegetables, and that's good, cheaper and fresher. It doesn't have much infrastructure, things are more difficult and require more hard work. It's not for everyone to live in a rural area, let alone someone who has always been in an urban area.

There are also downsides: it's not easy to get a good job or to develop personally and professionally. People often leave the countryside in search of opportunities, because they are scarce. This is perhaps one of the reasons why I left where I lived and am now living in an urban area, I know how difficult it is.

I have to be honest: many of the things I find here today make me wonder whether or not I like living in an urban area. The comfort and convenience are good, the opportunities are good, but the peace and quiet that a small town has perhaps outweighs all the others. Getting to know the people who live near you and knowing that if you need help, they will help you, not having to watch your back in the street for fear of being mugged or run over, among other advantages, is something that makes me want to go back to a place like this.

Perhaps, if I had the choice, I'd have a house in the countryside to spend the weekends, I'd be in this chaos during the week, but it presents me with more opportunities. As I get older, I might prefer to live somewhere quieter, but until then, I still have to face this urban madness.

Escolher um lugar para morar traz uma certa responsabilidade nessa decisão. Normalmente, temos duas opções quando o assunto é se estabelecer em um lugar: área rural ou urbana. Claro que talvez consigamos encontrar uma cidade ou local que seja um meio-termo, uma cidade pequena que seja minimamente urbanizada já seria algo mais próximo desse equilíbrio? Talvez, mas, independente de qual seja a escolha, sabemos que existem pontos positivos e negativos nesse tipo de ambiente.

Posso falar com propriedade sobre esse tipo de assunto, pois já morei por muitos anos em área rural e já tem muitos anos que moro em uma área urbana, e sim, são cenários muito diferentes. Talvez os pontos negativos da cidade grande sejam proporcionais aos pontos positivos. Em lugares mais urbanizados, temos uma infraestrutura muito melhor, mais oportunidades de emprego e mais variedades de caminhos que podemos seguir profissionalmente, além de mais oportunidades de estudar e nos tornarmos profissionais.

Morar em uma cidade grande e urbanizada é bom e, em muitos aspectos, é mais conveniente e confortável, temos tudo ao nosso redor, e até mesmo para aqueles que não gostam de sair de casa, tudo chega até você! Porém, também existem grandes pontos negativos, como o trânsito infernal diário. Estamos mais expostos à criminalidade, e o estresse também faz parte do nosso dia a dia. As pessoas não se importam umas com as outras, e há muitos oportunistas e pessoas insensíveis ao próximo. Claro, o custo de vida também é mais alto, tudo que você faz é pago, e o que não faltam são coisas que te atraem a gastar mais dinheiro!

A vida rural é diferente e, até certo ponto, oposta à zona urbana. As pessoas se importam mais umas com as outras e são empáticas. Não existem muitas opções industrializadas para alimentos ou as facilidades de entrega ou comida rápida, o que você quer comer precisa ser preparado. Mas também é um estilo de alimentação que pode ser mais saudável, pois estamos mais perto de legumes, frutas e hortaliças, e isso é bom, mais barato e mais fresco. Não possui muita infraestrutura, as coisas são mais difíceis e exigem mais trabalho duro. Não é para qualquer um morar em uma zona rural, muito menos alguém que sempre esteve em uma zona urbana.

Pontos negativos também existem, não é fácil ter uma boa oportunidade de emprego ou evolução pessoal e profissional. Muitas vezes, as pessoas abandonam a zona rural em busca de oportunidades, pois isso é algo escasso. Essa talvez seja uma das razões que me fez sair de onde morava e estar morando em uma zona urbana, sei o quanto é difícil.

Devo ser sincero: muitas coisas que encontro aqui hoje me fazem pensar se gosto ou não de morar em uma zona urbana. O conforto e a comodidade são bons, as oportunidades são boas, mas o sossego e a paz que uma cidade pequena tem talvez compensem todas as outras. Conhecer as pessoas que moram perto de você e saber que, se precisar de ajuda, elas vão ajudar, não precisar ficar atento na rua com medo de ser assaltado ou atropelado, entre outras vantagens, é algo que me deixa com vontade de voltar para um lugar assim.

Talvez, se eu pudesse escolher, teria uma casa no campo para passar os finais de semana, ficaria durante a semana nesse caos, mas que me apresenta mais oportunidades. Com mais idade, talvez eu prefira morar em um lugar mais calmo, mas até lá, ainda preciso enfrentar essa loucura urbana.
